Position Summary:
The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Center of Cross Cultural Studies(CCS) invites applications for a tripartite Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position in Indigenous Studies.
Duties:
20Research: Develop an independent research program that engages undergraduate and graduate students. Pursue external funding to support this program. Publish results in the peer-reviewed literature.Essential 20Service: Other professional duties included: serving on department, college and university committees; and providing professional and public service to the department, college, university and community.Essential 60Course development and Instruction: The successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach courses in a manner consistent with the specific course content descriptions; develop and modify curriculum and teaching modalities; and hold office hours appropriate for the courses being taught.Essential
UAF's Strategic Goal #2 is to solidify our global leadership in Alaska Native and Indigenous programs. The Center for Cross Cultural Studies (CCS) operates two unique graduate programs including a master's degree and a Ph.D. program in Indigenous Studies. Indigenous Studies is an interdisciplinary field that draws from a variety of subjects including education, political science, history, anthropology, and others. CCS's Indigenous Ph.D. program is the highest Native Studies degree-granting program in Alaska. Combined with the MA program, CCS works hard to increase the recognition of Indigenous scholarship across a range of academic disciplines to best serve our students.
CCS's mission is to improve the educational and professional development opportunities for Indigenous Peoples. CCS also serves as a forum for exploring cross-cultural and Indigenous education as well as community development issues across the state and globe. The program explores and grounds students in tribal histories and cultures, governmental policies, and Indigenous affairs. Indigenous Studies graduates are prepared to make leadership contributions throughout communities in Alaska, the circumpolar north, and beyond.
This position is eligible to work remotely from anywhere within the United States and Canada.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Knowledge of Alaska Native peoples, history, and contemporary issues.
Expertise in the field of Indigenous Studies with proficiency in Indigenous literature, theories, paradigms, research methodologies, pedagogy, and worldviews.
Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Ability to advise a diverse student population with a specific focus on rural, Alaska Native, and/or Indigenous students.
Ability to learn, modify and develop curriculum to expand and grow the Indigenous Studies graduate programs.
Ability to teach using a variety of modalities including traditional on-campus, intensives, distance-delivered, and asynchronous courses.
Preferred Experience & Education:
Prior university teaching experience.
Prior experience studying, teaching, and/or researching content in the field of Indigenous Studies.
Prior experience teaching, mentoring, and advising Alaska Native/American Indian undergraduate and graduate students.
Required Experience & Education:
Applicants for this position must have completed a doctoral degree and have expertise in teaching distance education courses and guiding student research within fields related to Alaska Native and Indigenous Studies. Desired areas of expertise include Indigenous knowledge systems, Indigenous history, cultural studies in the humanities and social sciences, Federal Indian law and policy, Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA), traditional ways of supporting community well-being, and comparative studies in the Arctic and Circumpolar regions. Applicants should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the contents of ANCSA and how this legislation has affected Alaska.
Salary Information:
