PND Engineers, Inc. is seeking a qualified and motivated Inspector to lead field inspection efforts for a wide range of bridge, culvert, and marine structures throughout Alaska. This role involves significant time in the field, often in remote and challenging environments. Our team provides condition assessment services and engineering evaluations for infrastructure assets managed by local, state, and federal agencies, as well as private owners across Alaska. These assets may include bridges, docks, piers, wharves, culverts, and other hydraulic structures.

 

The successful candidate will conduct thorough condition assessments using both conventional and rope access methods. Level 1 or higher IRATA or SPRAT certification is strongly preferred due to the access requirements of many structures. Accurate, detailed reporting is essential, and strong technical writing skills are required to meet client and regulatory standards. Completion of the FHWA/NHI "Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges" training is required. A minimum of five years of relevant bridge inspection experience or a Professional Engineer is desired. Extensive travel and extended field deployments should be expected.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and coordinate inspection timing, logistics and safety for various bridge, culvert and marine structures throughout Alaska.
  • Conduct thorough inspections of structures.
  • Identify potential structural issues and recommend corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant codes and regulations.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports.
  • Help with coordination amongst inspection staff, subcontractors, and key stakeholders.
  • Record daily notes, photo logs, and other required documentation from inspections.
  • Stay current with industry developments and technological advancements.
  • Conduct follow-up inspections to verify corrective actions.
  • Assist in the development of inspection protocols and procedures.
  • Participate in training and professional development activities.
  • Communicate effectively with clients and stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • SPRAT\IRATA Rope Access Level 1 or higher preferred but not required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering is preferred but not required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in bridge structural inspection or a registered Professional Engineer.
  • Must be able to work in the field, often involving overnight stays in remote locations.
  • Ability to conduct inspection outdoors with corresponding exposure to varying weather conditions and natural elements.
  • Ability to extensively bend, kneel, stand, and lift and carry objects weighing up to 25 lbs is required.
  • Physical ability to carry ladders and gear, work at heights, and work in water with waders, and work from small boats, kayaks, etc.
  • Basic understanding of structural analysis and design of steel, concrete, pre-stressed concrete and timber.
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Completed the FHWA/NHI 130055 bridge inspection basic course or equivalent.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
