Senior Accountant

Position Purpose:

The Senior Accountant is responsible for preparing Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) grants and other federal grants of Alaska Energy Authority. This position creates financial reports and reimbursements; processes accounts receivable invoices related to federal awards; providing project and grant accounting support; general ledger account reconciliations; and other routine accounting functions for the Alaska Energy Authority.

Essential Functions:

§ Prepares federal award monthly or quarterly financial reports and reimbursement requests. This position is responsible for submitting all approved financial reports and reimbursement requests to the various federal agencies. Works with AEA project managers to ensure timely submission of federal reporting documentation and reimbursement requests. Prepares sales invoices in the accounting system to record the accounts receivable entry.

§ Assists with processing and monitoring federal award documents via various federal systems.

§ Prepares budget entries related to federal funds and state matching funds upon receipt of a federal award or approved project management plan. At the higher range, this position may also post budget entries prepared by others.

§ Reviews and approves journal entries for accuracy, validity, and compliance with applicable grant and contract terms, internal policies, and procedures.

§ Reviews procurement requests and submits encumbrances. This task requires a working knowledge of fund and appropriation accounting in order to verify that the invoices are accurately coded, contain appropriate backup documentation, and within appropriate purpose and scope of the grant and/or funding.

§ Prepares bank and wire transfers and submits to supervisor for review and approval. Bank transfers are prepared weekly for accounts payable transactions and have a strict deadline for completion. Prepares other transfers on either a weekly, monthly, or quarterly timeline.

§ Performs general ledger account reconciliations. Researches any differences, and when corrections are necessary, prepares journal entries. This also includes attaching the backup information for supervisory staff to review and post. Reconciliations are done monthly, and at year-end, both according to deadlines.

§ Monitors budget to actuals for all IIJA funding and reports status to management on a monthly basis.

§ Prepares complex investment reconciliation for various accounts.

§ Respond to external audit grant confirmation request.

§ As requested, assists with preparing various reports for management, project management, and external requests.

§ Meets strict weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, and year-end deadlines.

§ Other duties as assigned.

The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Technology, Equipment, Systems, and Tools:

Requires basic skills in word processing, database software, email and general office equipment.

Critical Knowledge, Skills, and abilities:

§ Knowledge of standard accounting and governmental fund accounting.

§ Ability to read and understand the terms and conditions of grant agreements and contracts.

§ Skills in Navision or other enterprise database system, Excel, MSWord, MS Outlook, performing /math calculations.

§ Strong time management skills and ability to meet all critical weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, and year-end deadlines.

§ Ability to be flexible in setting work priorities.

§ Ability to communicate both orally and in writing with Project Managers, federal agencies, contractors/vendors, bank staff, supervisors, and other staff.

§ Ability to work cooperatively with staff utilizing effective methods and computer systems for record keeping, reconciliation, and preparation of management reports.

§ Ability to learn and apply new accounting processes, policies, procedures, methods, and techniques.

Desired Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or related field and four years of experience in related accounting role is preferred. Consideration will be given to a combination of coursework in Accounting or Finance and equivalent work experience.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

§ Range 18: Performs essential functions with supervision, direction, and collaboration.

§ Range 20: Performs all essential functions with minimal supervisory assistance; including, all federal financial reports and reimbursement requests prepared and provided to the supervisor in a timely manner with all appropriate backup and without reminders from the supervisor. In addition, reconciliations are prepared and correcting entries researched and provided to the supervisor with appropriate backup and documentation explaining the need for the correction.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $68,543.00 - $78,254.00 per year
