What does Yukon Equipment Inc. do?

Yukon Equipment specializes in sales of new and used construction equipment, repairs, rentals, parts, and service. Find everything you need for backhoes, excavators, skid steers, wheel loaders, bulldozers, equipment trailers, forklifts, and tractors.

 

What can you expect?

As the Field Service Technician, you will work onsite in Anchorage, AK and will be responsible for performing on-site diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on a variety of heavy equipment. This hands-on role requires strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills, a high level of independence, and a commitment to delivering exceptional service in remote and often challenging environments. You must be willing to travel to fly-in and marine-access locations as needed.

 

How will you do it?

  • Perform maintenance and repair activities on various pieces of heavy equipment, including, but not limited to, heavy-duty trucks and semi-tractors, material spreaders, 6-wheel drive military-type vehicles, excavators, skid steers, high-pressure pumps, 25-ton or smaller bulldozers, graders, cranes, underbody blades, dump bodies, snow plows, crawler tractors and trailers, backhoes, trailers, street sweepers, aerial towers, and man lifts.
  • Diagnose, service, and repair various systems found on pieces of heavy equipment, such as mechanical and computer electronic controls, air brake systems, transmissions, computer-controlled automatic and 13-speed manual transmissions, propane-powered equipment, and pneumatic systems.
  • Troubleshoot malfunctions in the equipment and make repairs.
  • Service and repairs track drive sprockets, rails, idler wheels, hard bars, and track adjusters. Hydraulic reversers, final drives, brake hands, steering clutches, and hydrostatic transmissions.
  • Fabricate, modify, and install special equipment or replacement parts using welders, torches, sets, plasma cutters, and metal cutting saws.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks and adjustments on fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires, and clutches.
  • Change filters and oil, lubricate vehicles and motor-driven equipment.
  • Service, diagnose, repair, and maintain speed tandem drive axles with air or electric shift hydrostatic driven, heavy duty multi-axle suspensions, both conventional steel and air springs.
  • Tune gas and diesel engines, service valves, fuel filters, turbochargers, pressure check fuel filters, adjust injector heights, fuel racks, governors, etc.
  • Diagnose, disassemble, repair, and replace parts; reassemble units in the following systems:
  • Brakes: Repair or replace shoe pads, drums, hoses, calipers, cylinders, and heavy-duty air brakes.
  • Cooling: Repair or replace radiators, hoses, thermostats, water pumps, fan drives, filters, air intercoolers, and oil coolers.
  • Drive: Repair and replace drive shafts, differentials, axles, manuals, automatics, sophisticated computer-controlled transmissions, clutches, transfer cases, power take-off systems, transmission reversers, all-wheel drive steering axles, and final drives.
  • Electrical: Repair or replace fuses, batteries, lights, warning devices and sensors, controls and switches, computer controls, modules, alternators, starters, and defective cables and wiring.  This includes 12 and 24-volt systems found on military equipment.
  • Exhaust and Emissions Control: Replace DEF modules, injector, sensors, and heater units. manifolds, catalytic converters, SCR, and DPF mufflers. Turbochargers, standard exhaust systems.
  • HVAC: Repair and replace heater cores, condensers, compressors, hoses, and controls; recharge air conditioning systems.
  • Hydraulic: Repair or replace pumps, hoses, valves, winches, and cylinders.
  • Air: Repair or replace compressors, air dryers, brake valves, air tanks, and hoses.
  • Steering and Suspension: System: Repair or replace tie rods, ball joints, gear boxes, shock absorbers, springs, steering linkage, kingpins, power steering, hoses, pumps, and air suspensions.
  • Coupling Devices: Adjust, repair, inspect, and replace fifth wheel and pintle hitches.
  • Overhaul and replace engines and rebuild components.
  • Maintain service logs and records of maintenance on vehicles and motorized equipment, using fleet maintenance and management software.
  • Prepare work orders and parts needed to complete the project.
  • Keep tools, equipment, and work areas clean, organized, and in good working conditions.
  • Assist in training and mentoring junior technicians in mechanical repair procedures. Perform road tests to evaluate vehicle performance and verify repair quality. Provide instruction and training in the proper methods and processes for equipment repair, inspection, and preventative maintenance.
  • Perform inspections on a variety of heavy equipment in the field.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge and experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy-duty equipment.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills with the ability to evaluate data.
  • Exceptional time management skills.
  • In depth understanding of the basics of the repair and maintenance of both gas and diesel vehicles and equipment.
  • Familiarity with hazardous waste regulations.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, in order to deal effectively with a variety of interpersonal relationships and situations. 
  • Ability to be a team player.
  • Good working knowledge of various personal computer business software applications presently used by the Company.  Ability to learn new applications.
  • Ability to work by yourself with minimal supervision at various locations around Alaska.
  • Ability, knowledge, and agility necessary to complete installations and/or repairs.
  • Ability to use diagnostic scanners and electronic tools.
  • Ability to maintain skills as technology advances.
  • Ability to actively listen and provide high quality customer service.
  • Ability to do business ethically with customers, vendors, and co-workers. 
  • Ability to draw conclusions and justify decisions.
  • Ability to be detail oriented; superior organizational, follow-up, and records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations, detect unobvious facts and issues, and exercise resourcefulness in resolving problems.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to learn and understand the Company’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Ability to maintain a professional appearance.
  • Ability to work in a Native Corporation multi-business environment.

 

Who is Yukon Equipment looking for?

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 5 (five) years’ experience working on heavy equipment required.
  • Valid state driver’s license and be qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of Yukon Equipment Driving Policy.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment background check and drug screen.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Vocational Technical and/or college degree in Industrial/Construction Equipment preferred.
  • Class A CDL preferred. Must have a DOT physical.

 

Working Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud due to the running of the equipment.  There is often limited exposure to chemical fumes generated by the equipment and some jobs require an employee to be exposed to inclement weather conditions and/or hazardous work environments.
