Position Summary:

University of Alaska Anchorage is seeking an Executive Director of University Advancement to provide dynamic, strategic leadership in the areas of Development and Alumni Relations. The Executive Director of University Advancement will proactively manage professionals in all areas of university advancement including the development, implementation and evaluation of UAA’s fundraising efforts, donor relations, alumni relations and related activities. This position will be responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with key community stakeholders including alumni, benefactors, students, faculty, staff, Alaska business and nonprofit entities, and the broader public in advancing the university’s overall mission of research, teaching and public service. The position will report directly to the UAA Chancellor.

Duties:

Leads university development and alumni relations teams within UAA Advancement Department. Manages diverse team of professional staff. Manages development, implementation and evaluation of annual integrated advancement plan. Helps ensure UAA strategic goals and leadership vision is met. Implements and evaluates strategies for university-wide initiatives including development campaigns and alumni relations. Utilizes fundraising best practices in pursuit of major gifts, endowment, non-cash asset gifts and planned giving for campuses, colleges and UAA as a whole. Builds internal and external relationships with key constituencies -- donors, prospective donors, alumni, community members, students, faculty, staff, and business community. Works with Chancellor and campus leadership to develop and implement strategic direction for UAA development and alumni relations. Ensures best practices in all aspects of fundraising -- including major gifts, annual giving, planned gifts, donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Provides leadership for robust alumni engagement -- events and activities fostering affinity and support for university. Advises Chancellor on development, civic involvement, and management of donor prospects. Strategizes with senior leadership across UA system on relationship management with major UA/UAA-wide prospects and donors. Leads UAA fundraising strategies identified by Chancellor and university departments. Implements donor-centric model based on UAA's strategic goals. Serves as chief liaison with University of Alaska Foundation. Collaborates with advancement teams across UA System. Oversees programs, budgets and policies as part of integrated Advancement Department. Manages team of professional, administrative and technical support personnel.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

High level of written, oral and interpersonal communication skills essential. Attention to detail, strong analytical and organizational skills necessary. High regard for ethics, matters of confidentiality and fiduciary responsibility. Ability to manage a large team and multiple projects with competing deadlines required. Strong understanding of university advancement functional areas (development, alumni, and external relations). Ability to lead team managers, mentor young professionals, set long-range plans and manage budgets. Excellent customer service and donor relations skills, commitment to continuous improvement and ability to communicate with a broad variety of audiences. This position requires the ability to handle difficult situations with tact, respect and diplomacy.

TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

Leadership/management experience in marketing, fundraising, strategic planning and public speaking. Documented successful experience in executive level management requiring financial accountability, contract administration and supervision of both technical and non-technical staff.

Preferred Experience:
6-10 years of experience in philanthropy, development, fundraising, event planning, marketing, business development (or combination) in the public or private sector. Familiarity or experience working in higher education, as well as previous work on fundraising and advocacy campaigns preferable.

REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:

Bachelor's degree in business, finance, communications, public relations, marketing, management, public administration, non-profit management or related field (or) an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred Education or Training:
Master's degree in similar disciplines.

 

Job Duration: 12 months a year, complete with a competitive benefits package. Salary is commensurate with experience.
