Instructor for Transition Age Youth with Disabilities

This position will serve as faculty/instructor for the TAPESTRY Program at UAA, a postsecondary transition program designed to build career, life, social, and academic skills for young adults ages 16-22 years of age who experience cognitive and intellectual disabilities as defined in the Higher Education Opportunity Act enacted in 2008. This project will build on UAA's existing infrastructure and resources to create opportunities for academic enrichment, extracurricular activities, work experiences and career skills that lead to gainful employment for these young adults. CHD is a University Center for Excellence in Disabilities established in federal law to provide interdisciplinary education, community/public service, research, and information dissemination.

As an instructor for our Tapestry program you will have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of transition age youth, ages 16-22, with disabilities who are making their way into the adult world of employment and community living. You will have the opportunity to teach a relevant curriculum alongside another instructor and assist the youth in exploring exciting career opportunities. As university faculty, you are eligible for a variety of benefits, including paid leave and tuition waivers for you and your eligible family members. You will also have the opportunity to work with a dedicated group of 50 + individuals at the Center for Human Development working towards our mission of improving the quality of lives for people who experience disabilities and their families.

Demonstrated skills at developing collaborative relationships and communicating effectively with a variety of stakeholders (students, families, DVR, school districts, etc.). Enjoy working with transition age youth with disabilities and their families and related partner organizations to facilitate person-centered transition/career plans; have experience in worksite and job development, and be comfortable collaborating with host employers.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in social work, special education, psychology or related field, Master's degree preferred. An equivalent combination of at least five years training and experience working and/or lived experience with people with disabilities may be substituted.

Position Details:

This position is located on the University of Alaska campus in Anchorage. This is a full-time, term-funded, 9-month base contract with a 3-month contract extension, term-funded faculty position complete with both a competitive salary https://www.alaska.edu/hr/benefits/support/prospectiveemployees.php.
