JOB DESCRIPTION 

Job Title:         Lead Academic Instructor 

Department:    Youth Education 

Reports To:     Program Coordinator  

Supervises:      None 

FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt 

Pay Grade:      N5 

Job Type:        Regular, Full-Time

General Functions:  

The Academic Instructor will work with Alaska Native/American Indian students in various settings, both in and out of the Denelchin Lab and on-site at ASD schools.  The Academic Instructor will provide one-on-one tutoring, as well as group tutoring, and will be expected to participate in special events and extra-curricular activities.   The Academic Instructor is also responsible for assisting with instruction, parent involvement programs, building culturally relevant and innovative activities, and collaborating with Nuninyu staff. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Encourage curiosity and a love of learning.  

  • Learn and implement new teaching methods, including cultural and trauma informed practices 

  • Support students in learning reading, writing, math, & reading in the social studies & science content areas.  

  • Facilitate study sessions and assign specific learning objectives based on their skill levels. 

  • Develop graduation plans for participants on a one-on-one basis, by assessing transcripts, test scores, credit checks, schedules, career and academic plans, and ASD credit recovery programs. 

  • Utilize different databases to access student data, maintain student records, and communicate information regarding student progress. 

  • Provide expert instruction and coaching to students preparing for the GED exam. 

  • Monitor participants’ progress regarding attendance and academic progress within their educational plans. 

  • Use cultural activities to connect with students, making learning experiences more relatable and meaningful. 

  • Develop and deliver instructional content, incorporating students' cultural backgrounds and prior knowledge. 

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize multiple activities and prioritize workload. 

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, educational, training and cultural needs of and resources for the Alaska Native/American Indian community. 

  • Maintain confidentiality according to policy and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, management, or similar field of study. Relevant experience may substitute for the degree requirements on a year-for-year basis. 

  • Experience working with Alaska Native/American Indian people, knowledge of their values and belief systems, their educational issues and ability to provide culturally relevant services. 

  • Two years’ experience in educational and/or social service programs within the Alaska Native/American Indian communities or with Alaska Native/American Indian youth in the school system. 

  • Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of state and federal background checks.  

  • Valid Alaska driver’s license and insurable under CITC’s automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age and have had a driver’s license for at least three years.  

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Possesses an Alaska Teaching Credential or has the ability to attain one within 3 months of employment.  

  • Experience in curriculum development
