Communications Manager

Bean's Cafe, Inc., in service since 1979, exists to fight hunger for all ages, one meal at a time while providing a pathway to self-sufficiency with dignity and respect. 

We currently operate the mass emergency shelter at the Sullivan Arena; providing a safe, clean, comfortable environment for our clients. This includes three meals per day, showers, laundry, a medical clinic, and a community resource hub and navigation team to assist individuals in exiting shelter permanently. 

The Children's Lunchbox, a program of Bean's Cafe has been in operation since 2006 and is focused on feeding hungry and food-insecure children and families. We do this through various methods, including our pantry pack, weekend food, and summer food programs.

Job Summary: 

The Communications Manager will help to create and promote the corporate identity and mission to customers, the public, and employees through the creation and distribution of brochures, news releases, and other documents.  The Communications Manager will be responsible for internal and external communications sent from Bean’s Cafe and The Children’s Lunchbox (TCL). The goal is to ensure a consistent voice while increasing brand awareness, employee morale, and boosting donations. 


Supports Vision: 

 The Communications Manager supports the mission of Bean’s Cafe by spreading the word and the mission/vision of Bean’s Cafe to internal and external stakeholders.  



  • Oversees and produces, from concept to completion, a broad array of digital and/or print promotional, and communication materials for the organization. 

  • Ensures that all materials present a clear, unified, and positive image for the organization and/or brand. 

  • Create and maintain a Branding Guideline to assist in consistency for the organization.  

  • Plans, prepares, and distributes original promotional content such as articles, news and press releases, email, blog and social media posts, coordinate the employee/HR newsletter, and other updates on behalf of the organization. 

  • Promotes and reports on corporate milestones and activities such as company goals and projects; new products or services; community service activities; and new hires, promotions, and retirements. 

  • Arranges for photography and/or press coverage for special events. 

  • Coordinates public relations and community engagement activities alongside CEO, COO, and Development and Communications Director. 

  • Create and maintain a Communications Plan on behalf of the organization. 

  • Monitor, analyze and update the website.   

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.  


Required Skills/Abilities:  

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  

  • Extremely proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and desktop publishing software. 

  • Proficient in Photoshop and/or other digital and graphic editing software. 

  • Proficient with social media, press releases, and communication platforms and best practices.  

  • Excellent organizational, time management skills and attention to detail. 

  • Ability to work independently or with a large variety of individuals/personalities.  

  • Ability to undergo and pass a background check. 

  • Comfortable navigating changes in a positive and mission driven manner. 

  • Creative, assertive, and proactive individuals appreciated.  


Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field required. 

  • Five years of experience in marketing, publications, or a related field required, preferably in a nonprofit organization. 


Physical Requirements:  

  • Must be able to climb stairs. 

  • Must be able to work with background distractions. 

  • Must have normal range of hearing and vision with or without correction, and have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned. 

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds from the ground up  

  • Must have manual dexterity sufficient to use technology, office equipment and supplies, etc.
