Duties:
Essential
The University of Alaska Fairbanks HVAC Shop seeks applicants for the position of Preventative Maintenance Technician to perform PM work in order to keep mechanical equipment in peak operating condition. Typical work will include changing air filters, greasing motors, cleaning mechanical equipment, and performing visual checks on a variety of mechanical equipment. Typical work schedule will be M-F 8:00am - 4:30pm. Successful applicants will demonstrate at least one year in a field related to this position (building or equipment maintenance), and be a high school graduate or equivalent. This is a range recruitment from MSW4 - CT2.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
MSW4
1. Ability to work safely and to ensure the safety of others.
2. Ability to prioritize and consistently complete assigned work in a reasonable amount of time.
3. Effective problem solving skills and attention to detail.
4. General knowledge of building mechanical systems in a commercial environment.
5. General knowledge of equipment operation and repair and the ability to use hand and power tools.
6. Ability to keep accurate maintenance records for various pieces of equipment.
7. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and customers.
CT1
1. Knowledge of commercial HVAC/R systems and equipment including fans, compressors, filters, chillers, and pumps
2. Appropriate training in HVAC/R systems troubleshooting and repair is required.
3. Familiarity with basic computer programs such as MS Office software and web browsers is required.
4. Experience with Siemens building automation systems preferred.
5. A commitment to exceptional customer service is required.
6. Basic working knowledge of electricity and electrical systems is required.
7. Possession of a valid Driver's license and ability to operate University vehicles is required.
8. Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of students, faculty, staff, and other shop personnel.
CT2
1. Requires in-depth knowledge of chemical treatment methods for hydronic heating and cooling systems (including appropriate use of propylene and ethylene glycol, molybdenum and nitrate based inhibitors). Also requires in depth knowledge of HVAC system components including air handlers, heat exchangers, Direct Digital Controls, and related equipment.
2. Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the use of related hand tools.
3. Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form.
4. Ability to collect equipment data by a variety of methods and to anticipate equipment needed to take effective action.
5. Ability to adhere to safety standards and procedures; working in a safe manner.
6. Analytical and problem solving skills.
Proficiency in delivering exceptional customer service is expected at all skill levels. This includes the capacity to establish and sustain productive working relationships with individuals and groups while effectively contributing as a team member.
Ability to pass the 16-hour Asbestos Operations & maintenance course, pass the annual asbestos physical, and pass appropriate respirator fit test and training.
Possession of a valid Driver's license and ability to operate University vehicles per University guidelines is required.
Preferred Experience & Education:
MSW4
1. Successful applicant will demonstrate at least three years in a field related to this position (building or equipment maintenance).
CT1
1. 3 years of experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing HVAC/R equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
3. At least one year experience performing preventative maintenance work on HVAC/R equipment.
CT2
Five years or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Experience & Education:
MSW4
1. May possess journeyman level certification. Requires apprentice level or other equivalent
certification appropriate to the specific trade; with a minimum of three years related experience
and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
CT1
1. Basic working knowledge of electricity and electrical systems is required.
3. Appropriate training in HVAC/R systems troubleshooting and repair is required.
4. Familiarity with basic computer programs such as MS Office software and web browsers is required.
CT2
1. Must have a Class 2 boiler license or have the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
2. Journeyman level or equivalent skills, education, and experience in HVAC systems repair, with a focus on boiler operation and maintenance and hydronic heating and cooling systems water quality.
Possession of a valid Driver's license, clean driving record in compliance with UA Safe Driving Criteria and ability to operate University vehicles is required.

This is a full-time, non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and https://alaska.edu/jobs/benefits.php.
Salary Information: This is a range recruitment from MSW4 - CT2.
MSW4/Step1, $21.65/hour - CT2 /Step 1 $27.40/hr. (See Article 9.2 in the L6070 Collective Bargaining Agreement, https://www.alaska.edu/hr/labor/labor-relations/local-6070.php#collapse3d13e356).
