Security Sergeant: Eklutna Power Plant


JOB SUMMARY

Security Sergeant provides protection of work sites, personnel and assets from such events such as assault, theft vandalism, harassment and other disruptive incidents.  The Security Sergeant also has administrative responsibilities as assigned by the Security Director and/or the Security Lieutenant. This position works a two weeks on / two weeks off rotational schedule.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of two (2) years of law enforcement background or equivalent of four (4) years private security service background, completion of a certified Law Enforcement Academy Training Program, or Military Service in related security fields
  • Certified by the State of Alaska as an Armed Security Officer (or ability to obtain)
  • Certified by DUS with the issued firearm, and if the client requires, the issued shotgun
  • Mandatory Defensive Driving classes (within 30 days from start of employment)
  • Mandatory Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT) certification (within 120 days from start of employment)
  • OC (Pepper Spray) Certification (within 120 days from start of employment)
  • Able to proficiently speak, read, understand and write English

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Affect an arrest, if necessary, using handcuffs
  • Perform searches of people, vehicles, vessels, buildings, and large outdoor areas
  • Confront suspicious persons, assess intentions, and take action as appropriate
  • Maintain composure and control of a situation while enduring verbal and mental abuse when confronted with the hostile views and opinions of people encountered in an antagonistic environment
  • Make management level decisions in emergencies
  • Assume temporary responsibility of job assignments and special projects in the absence of staff members
  • Perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies and disasters to include administering emergency medical aid, removing people from dangerous situations, and securing and evacuating people from hazardous areas.
  • May work extended hours beyond regularly scheduled time in event of emergencies
  • Extinguish fires by using a fire extinguisher and other appropriate means
  • Gather information in investigations by interviewing and obtaining statements of all participants and witnesses
  • Complete thorough, comprehensive incident reports as necessary after investigations
  • Monitor closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) and retrieve electronic information for investigations and client needs after incidents
  • Schedule personnel and coordinate adjustments of the work force to meet immediate and projected manpower requirements and initiate personnel actions in accordance with DUS policy and procedure
  • Read, comprehend, and employ policies and procedures
  • Supervise training of assigned personnel on the job, provide direct instruction for security officers, and insure client and DUS training program requirements are met
  • Regularly evaluate individual performance of officers. Identify and develop personnel for promotion
  • Liaison with federal, state and local law enforcement authorities, client and DUS security leads and managers, federal and state oversight agencies, and other individuals
  • Operate a motor vehicle during both day and night in hazardous road conditions caused by factors such as rain, snow, sleet, ice, fog, smoke, and unimproved roads
  • Ability to work in a constant state of alertness in a safe manner
  • Willingness to perform other duties as required
  • Willingness to work at various locations as required

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

The employee’s work requires routine walking, standing, bending and carrying items. Applicant will be required to successfully complete a post-offer pre-hire physical and Functional Capacity Exam.
