Fire Captain: Valdez Marine Terminal


 

JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Security Captain, the employee will provide asset protection to client facilities, property and the right-of-way. Provide primary fire and rescue emergency response. Lead the DUS fire and safety team at the VMT. Comply with all DUS and client safety guidelines, policies and procedures. This is a rotational position in Valdez, Alaska; housing is not provided.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Able to proficiently speak, read, understand and write English
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Five years of experience in a leadership role within the fire service
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate, to the client’s satisfaction, all fire vehicles and specialized apparatus
  • State of Alaska Fire Service Instructor 1 Certification
  • State of Alaska Portable Fire Extinguisher Permit Class II
  • Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT)

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of work history in a harsh and/or remote location
  • Two years of work history at an oil or gas related facility
  • Three years of experience in a leadership/supervisory role
  • State of Alaska Fire Officer 1 certification
  • Rope rescue experience

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide primary fire, rescue, and medical emergency response
  • Maintain emergency response apparatus and equipment
  • Conduct preventative maintenance on fire systems as assigned
  • Perform monthly/annual inspections and maintenance of fire extinguishers
  • Perform snow shoveling of hydrants, valves, and other essential equipment and areas
  • Operate a skid steer
  • Deliver emergency response training to fire brigade and rescue team members
  • Deliver training to Alyeska employees and contractors
  • Prepare pre-emergency plans
  • Assist Alyeska Fire Safety Team in monitoring work in progress for compliance with work permits, policies, and regulations
  • Fire Captain may be used to backfill for the Alyeska Fire Chief
  • Manage and supervise firefighter personnel, equipment and facilities during routine and emergency situations
  • Assure all assigned equipment, uniforms, and gear is properly maintained and protected and inventories are accurate and complete
  • Assure that facilities furnished for firefighter use, afford proper protection from the elements and provide an environment, which encourages alert and efficient performance of duties.
  • Schedule personnel and coordinate adjustments of the work force to meet immediate and projected manpower requirements and initiate personnel actions
  • Supervise training of assigned personnel on the job, provide direct instruction for firefighters, and ensure client and DUS training program requirements are met
  • Maintain established standards of firefighter performance by personal example and commendation of superior performance, progressive discipline, and direct contact with personnel on a regular basis
  • Regularly evaluate firefighters’ performance on their reports, personal observations and information provided by others and take such corrective action as necessary to achieve optimum overall performance, in accordance with DUS personnel policies
  • Ensure all assigned personnel are personally prepared to perform their duties and be available to provide back up support for personnel on duty
  • Identify and develop personnel for promotion
  • Make management level decisions in routine events and in emergencies
  • Liaison with federal, state and local fire departments, client and DUS management, federal and state oversight agencies, and other stakeholders to maintain a constant awareness of activities which may impact the Fire Team
  • Perform confined space and high angle rescues
  • Work at heights and in tight spaces including small pipes with lengths up to 600 feet

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The employee may be required to live and work in a remote and confined workspace for extended periods of time and exposure to work assignments consisting of twelve-hour days and able to work day or night shifts as required. The majority of the work is performed in a remote setting with a wide variety of people in differing functions, personalities and abilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee’s work requires routine walking, standing, bending and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds. Essential and marginal functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for running, walking, crawling, climbing, crouching, stooping, and heavy lifting while wearing heavy protective equipment and during inclement weather conditions. Applicant will be required to successfully complete a post-offer pre-hire physical and Functional Capacity Exam. There is a lack of immediate access to critical medical services as well as urban community services.
