Position Summary:

The University of Alaska Anchorage, Division of Campus Services, seeks an Operations Manager (OM) to oversee and supervise operational aspects of the Alaska Airlines Center (AAC). The AAC is a stunning 196,000 square foot facility that seats up to 5,000 spectators in the main arena and is a cornerstone of UAA’s Anchorage campus. Working under the oversight of the AAC General Manager (GM), the OM is responsible for overall operation and setup of the Alaska Airlines Center. The OM coordinates and supervises venue conversions, consults with exhibit managers, promoters, facility representatives, and others concerning physical set-up needs and requirements for licensed arenas.

Duties:

Staff Development and Training: The Operations manager is responsible for overseeing and training, motivation and evaluation of operational and conversion personnel, and the management of all aspects of customer service related to internal and external customers. Accelerate excellence with a continuous improvement mindset for events and day to day operations. Ensures accountability for all members of the team contributing to the building stewardship, event readiness, and positive customer experience. Direct supervisory authority over operational event staff including hiring, training, and scheduling to support the event services.

Community Partnerships and Client Support: Support student success by embracing and modeling UAA core competencies in all aspects of the work: effective communication, creative and critical thinking, intercultural fluency, personal, professional community responsibility. Strengthen existing partnerships and develop new partnerships with community organizations including Alaska Native tribes, Athletic Sponsors, Corporations, local businesses, non-profits, and community groups. Develop strong campus partnerships by coordinating operations and collaborating with all University departments including, but not limited to: Athletics, Facilities and Campus Services, University Police, Environmental Health Safety Risk Management, Information Technology Services, Alumni Relations, Student Life and Leadership, and Residence Life. Organize, coordinate, and supervise building events and athletic operations for the optimal customer experience. Coordinate and collaborate with University Departments on the facility stewardship for a successful, positive, and streamlined customer experience.

Event Logistics, Equipment Maintenance, and Planning The OM is responsible for event equipment inventories, event and athletic department equipment maintenance, event conversions and setup of events including athletics events, concerts, tradeshows, building storage room inventory and oversight, and more. Utilizing appropriate drafting software, the OM will create maps/drawings/layouts for events and financial reports; manage and participate in the development and administration of an annual budget; direct the forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; direct and monitor expenditures. Develop plans and procedures for event move in and move out. Coordinate event setup with university departments to ensure building systems, equipment, maintenance and operations requirements are understood by all involved and properly adhered to. Coordinates with University Police Department on all matters relating to safety and security of the building, events, crowd safety & management (to include contract security staffing and training, police, fire, EMS, first aid staffing and requirements, traffic control planning and municipal permitting needs). Ensures compliance with university building manager program including participating in annual safety inspections. Responsibility over coordinating storage rooms inventories and safety with the various building entities including: UAA Facilities and Campus Services, UAA Bookstore, UAA Athletics, UAA Advancement, and established university vendors. Ensures compliance with Municipality of Anchorage for events management, permitting, setup and compliance.

Day to Day Arena Operations Utilizing independent judgment, the OM supervises and coordinates the day-to-day operations of the venue, including engineering and permitting required for events, athletic department and event equipment maintenance, set-up/changeovers, and effectively coordinating with university departments on custodial, grounds, building maintenance, information technology services, and security/safety. The OM provides typical event coordination setup and tear down including floor setup, stage risers, chairs, sound a/v, etc; administers and assists GM on contract development and vendor oversight and accountability; ensure proper coordination with university facilities personnel on building infrastructure and permanent systems and equipment. Coordinates with Risk Service on all insurance matters, accidents, Injuries, and investigations. Reports damage and or injuries to patrons and employees in the course of work or during events at AAC. Coordinates job hazard training and temporary controls with the environmental health safety director. Ensure stewardship and event operations strengthen UAA’s commitment to environmentally sustainable practices. Use university databases for work required including computerized maintenance management system, event scheduling software, safety training requirements for staff.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
● Experience with facility coordination and direct employee supervision
● Strong leadership and organizational skills with ability to function in a multi-task environment
● Strong written and oral communication skills, Excel and AutoCad (or similar software) proficiency are required
● Valid AK driver’s license, forklift and aerial lift certifications are required
● Bachelor’s degree in business, facility management, or another related field preferred
● Demonstrated organizational leadership ability.
● Ability to work with and maintain highly confidential information.
● Ability to work simultaneously with a broad variety of vested interest groups and to foster a cooperative environment, and commitment to diversity.

Typical Experience:

Bachelor's Degree (BA) preferred from a four-year accredited college or university with major course work in business, operations, or related field.

Required Education or Training:

Minimum of 2-4 years required of increasingly responsible Venue Operation or event operation/Management experience, preferably with a sports facility, convention center, performing arts facility, or other multi-purpose facility.

FERPA certification or certification completion within 30 days of the job start date.
Title IX certification or certification completion within 30 days of the job start date.
Behavior Based Safety (BBS) certification or certification completion within 30 days of the job start date.
Workplace Harassment Prevention certification or certification completion within 30 days of the job start date.

 

This is a full-time, term-funded, Grade 79, minimum $26.08/hr, DOE, 12-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package.

Term Position:
