Position Summary:
The University of Alaska Southeast (“UAS”) invites applications for the position of Executive Director of Advancement. The position reports to the Chancellor of the University. The University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) Executive Director of Advancement serves as the university's chief fundraising and advancement officer. The established office of the of the Executive Director of Advancement is located on the Juneau campus but the position is responsible for overseeing the development and advancement needs of all three (Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka) campuses. The Executive Director of Advancement will collaborate with the members of the Chancellor's Executive Cabinet to help lead UAS at a time of stabilizing resources and to continue this growth, they must have the ability to develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders to support the important role that the university plays in the region.
Duties:
10DEPARTMENT HEAD As a Department Head, the Executive Director is responsible for managing both people and unit operations. The Director has complete fiscal oversight / responsibility for multiple office budgets and has authorization to commit the organization to major expenditures and obligations. This position is responsible for ensuring UAS is in compliance with complex fund-raising laws and applicable IRS regulations regarding charitable giving. The Executive Director manages the recruitment and review of professional staff, onboards and mentors staff, and establishes annual goals with measurable outcomes for effective employee retention and program evaluation.Essential 20ALUMNI RELATIONS: The Director has ultimate responsibility for UAS Alumni Relations efforts and serves as the university's executive leadership for the University of Alaska Southeast Alumni Association (UASAA)' board of directors., The Executive Director ensures alignment of the association's goals with the university's mission. Provides program vision and oversight to the Alumni Manager & staff to ensure quality Alumni programming that integrates and supports the institution's overall strategic fund-raising plan.Essential 5FUND MANAGEMENT / ADVANCEMENT SERVICES The Executive Director works with major donors to design the parameters of new funds and craft fund administrative / donor gift agreements. This position is responsible for the supervision of all University of Alaska Foundation Advancement Services functions at UAS including: fund reporting, gift processing, timely donor acknowledgements, data entry, etc.Essential 5UNIVERSITY RELATIONS: Establish, in conjunction with the Chancellor, a comprehensive strategy for maintaining and enhancing relations with external constituency groups. This includes work with campus advisory groups, the UAS Development Advisory Council, the UAS Committee of the Juneau Chamber of Commerce, government officials, members of the general public, etc. Develop and implement community programs, public relations activities and special events to advance UAS''' mission and community relations goals. Represent UAS as an ambassador in the community and with business groups such as Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, etc.Essential 60DEVELOPMENT: This position designs and leads a comprehensive fundraising program with significant impact on UAS. In this capacity, the Executive Director serves as the Chief Development Officer for UAS and represents the UAS on the UA Executive Development Council (EDC), which is the highest level planning body for Development / Advancement Services within the UA system. The EDC establishes strategic overarching UA policies/ procedures for fund raising and coordinates the statewide development effort. At UAS, the Executive Director is responsible for all aspects of UAS fundraising including Principal Gift, Major Gift, Annual Giving, Planned Giving, Capital Campaigns, Corporation & Foundation Relations, and Stewardship and maintains a personal portfolio of major donors for cultivation and solicitation. The Executive Director strategizes and works internally with senior university leadership and externally with key volunteers, community leaders and UAS''' Development Advisory Council to grow philanthropic support of the university. The Executive Director acts as a liaison with the University of Alaska Foundation to ensure coordination of activity and collaboration on services provided by the UA Foundation. This position requires advanced specialized knowledge of philanthropy best practices, fundraising ethics, non-profit management, and IRS laws and regulations surrounding charitable giving.Essential
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
1. Knowledge of standard accepted fund-raising practices as demonstrated/supported by successful fund-raising experience including major gift, annual fund, special event, and capital campaign experience.
2. Knowledge and experience with specialized donor tracking computer software with report-generating capabilities that supports analysis of overall program effectiveness.
3. Specific knowledge and training in funding sources (e.g. corporation giving, private foundation funding, state and federal funding, etc.), grant research and proposal writing.
4. Knowledge and experience with Alumni relations and management of membership campaigns/ annual solicitations.
5. Public Relations/ Marketing knowledge and experience.
6. Experience with non-profit/volunteer/constituency groups and knowledge of board protocol and decorum. Demonstrated knowledge of acceptable volunteer management practices.
7. Training and specialized knowledge in tax laws governing charitable donations and planned giving programs.
18. Advanced knowledge, training, and experience with standard office computer software applications (e.g. word processing, spreadsheet, database, etc.).
Preferred Experience & Education:
High level of written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills is essential.
Strong analytical and program management skills is necessary.
High regard for ethics, matters of confidentiality and ability to handle difficult situations with tact, respect, and diplomacy.
Experience developing and managing budgets, and a high degree of fiscal responsibility.
Flexibility and adaptability is a must.
Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.
Strong understanding of university advancement functional areas (development, alumni, and university relations.
Ability to mentor young professionals, set long-range plans, and implement to achieve goals.
Experience with non-profit boards, alumni relations, and Raisers Edge fund-raising software preferred.
Required Experience & Education:
Professional CFRE certification (i.e. Association of Fund-Raising Professionals Certified Fund-Raising Executive) or Master's Degree in related field.
A minimum of four years professional level or higher experience in a higher education, corporate, foundation, or non-profit setting or a college degree.
Professional management and supervisory experience including the ability to hire, train,
motivate, and evaluate staff.
Excellent communication skills, oral and written, and professional demeanor.
A valid Alaska Driver's License is also required.
Salary Information:
This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and https://alaska.edu/jobs/benefits.php. New hires will be placed on the https://www.alaska.edu/hr/benefits/compensation/files/fy24_staff_salary_grid.pdf, Grade 83, based on education and experience. Salary commensurate with experience.
