Ketchikan Indian Community (KIC) Overview:

Ketchikan, Alaska is a cozy coastal town, rich in community and culture. Ketchikan Indian Corporation has the honor to be the governing body for the Natives in the Ketchikan area. The Tribe began direct delivery services to the native residents with only two staff Members in 1975. The staff has grown to over 100 employees with the increased identification of the Tribal community needs. Beginning in 1992 KIC became a signatory in a compact of self-governance between Southeast Tribes and the United States of America, providing services to Tribal Members in a Government to Government Relationship, upholding Sovereignty for Tribal Members. The Tribal Council, as the established governing body, provides oversight and works in collaboration with the KIC staff, who focus on daily business operations to provide the highest quality of programs and services to Tribal Members. Traditional Southeast Tribal values drive KIC. The KIC mission is to preserve Tribal Member’s sovereignty, enhancing economic and cultural resources and promote self-sufficiency and self-governance for their citizens through collaboration, service, and advocacy. KIC partners with the community and Tribal Members to deliver services and provide assistance in improving the lives of all Tribal Members.

Job Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as Lifestyle Coach for the Wellness Department and Diabetes Treatment and Diabetes Prevention Programs.  This is an entry level position conducted by someone familiar with Tribal members and the local community, who will facilitate activities one-to-one or in a group setting, teach selected classes, or other approved curriculum, recruit participants, and work with the wellness team to coordinate and deliver effective services. This position will serve as a liaison for the Wellness department and its programs as directed.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Implements program protocol in group and individual counseling sessions to assist participants in achieving individual health goals;
  • Instructs and assists participants in pre-diabetes management;
  • Uses Motivational Interviewing counseling skills to assist participants with behavior, lifestyle modification to achieve individual health goals;
  • Participates in local team meetings and national study meetings and trainings required of Lifestyle Coach I;
  • Monitors participant safety and compliance with program protocol;
  • Assists team members with administrative, data collection, recruitment, retention and data entry as required to meet program requirements;
  • Participates in screening and evaluation activities: collect body measurements (height, weight, waist, skin folds, etc.) and administer questionnaires using interviewing skills, as directed by Wellness Manager;
  • Verifies all data for accuracy;
  • Maintains confidentiality of all program information;
  • Flexible Scheduling.  Hours of attendance may vary between 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday – Saturday, to accommodate classes and education activities offered during the non-traditional work week.

  • Clerical - Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, excel, PowerPoint managing files and records, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology;
  • English Language - Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar;
  • Customer and patient care service - Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and patient care services.  This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction;

  • Work in the health care field, preferred;
  • Experience in health promotion, wellness, nutrition and/or physical activity, preferred.

Physical Activities Include

Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-15 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station. Position may require community and state wide travel.

License(s)

Must possess current valid State of Alaska driver's license or be eligible to receive one within 90 days of hire date and an acceptable driving record for KIC's Insurance carrier.

  • High School Diploma or GED required;
    • Two years or more work experience in an office setting.
