Public Relations Specialist


General Functions

Under the direction of the Director of Public and Resident Relations, this position supports the execution of the communications strategy for CIHA by assisting with internal and external communications, grant and award applications, as well as provides assistance in the development and management of content for social media.   

 Major Activities (Typical Duties/Responsibilities)

  • Supports the Director of Public and Resident Relations in developing and managing internal and external communications and community outreach.
  • Utilizes existing systems and helps develop content for internal communications.
  • Assists with award applications that positively highlight CIHA and its mission.
  • Creates content for external and internal communication products including message monitor boards, social media platforms and print materials.
  • Supports and assists in coordination of external events such as groundbreakings, grand openings, partner recognition activities, open houses, architectural design competitions and conferences or seminars.
  • Collaborates on the creation of communication products for meetings and other internal events.
  • Collects and evaluates data to determine value and benefit of internal methods of communication.
  • Assists in providing input into marketing materials and strategies for the various departments.
  • Represents CIHA at trade shows and partner events in the Cook Inlet region.
  • Participates in media interviews as a spokesperson for CIHA.
  • Serves as a resource for presentations and speech preparation.
  • Assists in the development, review and/or distribution of communications materials/messages including but not limited to press releases, brochures, pamphlets, newsletters, web content, fact sheets, key messaging and public statements. 
  • Helps to maintain a library of professional corporate photography to include CIHA properties, clients, residents and staff.
  • Maintains community contacts, information sources, and relationships with other related non-profit agencies, housing entities, funders, partners, government agencies and media.
  • Supports Resident Engagement department in communications needs.
  • May be required to work flexible schedule (evenings, weekends) as part of CIHA's public relations activities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience synthesizing technical information for lay audiences, making decisions, taking action, meeting deadlines, and working independently.
  • Demonstrated experience writing and creating content for a variety of audiences.
  • Knowledge of practices, procedures, and materials related to public relations best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a public relations environment, including superior public speaking communications skills.
  • Ability to make high quality public presentations and to speak effectively.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Must demonstrate working knowledge of design standards and programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign and have the ability to facilitate design, print and web activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to create graphics, posters, infographics and other printed materials.
  • Demonstrated event planning and execution ability.

Education and Experience         

  • BA Degree with major course work in public relations/communications or related areas or equivalent experience
  • Three years experience in the public relations field
  • Preferred two years’ experience in document design
  • On camera and press related experience required
  • Current AK Driver’s license
