General Functions:

The NYO Official provides essential officiating services for Native Youth Olympic competitions, working collaboratively with other officials and scorekeepers to ensure fair and accurate evaluation of competitor performance. This position maintains the integrity of traditional NYO events by applying standardized judging criteria and overseeing competition procedures during tryouts and competitive events. Working in partnership with our people, the NYO Official develops opportunities that fulfill our endless potential by preserving cultural traditions through sport and ensuring equitable competition for Alaska Native and American Indian youth athletes. The role requires comprehensive knowledge of NYO rules, strong attention to detail, and commitment to maintaining safe competitive environments that align with CITC's mission and values.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Officiate Native Youth Olympic competitions by applying established judging criteria and competition standards consistently and fairly.
  • Determine top performers in each round of competition based on NYO criteria and official scoring protocols.
  • Evaluate athlete performance objectively, ensuring equitable assessment based on established NYO standards and cultural protocols.
  • Oversee athletes during designated events, ensuring proper completion of competition procedures and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Maintain accurate scoring records, measurements, and competition data throughout each event and round of competition.
  • Coordinate athlete participation by calling competitors to events and ensuring competitions run according to established schedules.
  • Provide supervision and assistance to scorekeepers to ensure accurate and consistent record-keeping throughout competitions.
  • Tally and verify results for head official certification at the conclusion of each round of competition.
  • Maintain safe competitive environments for all participants, staff, and spectators during NYO events.
  • Attend mandatory officials' meetings and training sessions prior to competitive events to ensure consistent application of rules and procedures.
  • Collaborate with other officials to maintain competition integrity and resolve any disputes or concerns that may arise.
  • Perform all related duties as needed and assigned.

Job Specifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to provide clear instructions to groups of various sizes and ages.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of rules and regulations for NYO event officiating and judging criteria.
  • Strong understanding of basic mathematical principles for accurate scoring, measuring, and statistical calculation.
  • Ability to work independently and as a contributory team member in a positive, productive manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to use sound judgment when interacting with staff and participants of various ages and backgrounds in a non-judgmental manner.
  • Proven ability to perform under pressure while handling multiple priorities simultaneously and effectively.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native and American Indian community.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Continued employment is contingent upon completion of satisfactory state and federal fingerprint criminal background check.
  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience officiating Native Youth Olympic events or similar athletic competitions.
  • Experience working with Alaska Native and American Indian youth in competitive or educational settings.
  • Knowledge of traditional Alaska Native cultural practices and values.

Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Good manual dexterity.
  • Standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently, by utilizing proper lifting techniques and working in a safe manner.
  • The ability to wear the appropriate PPE.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, and reaching, kneeling, crouching, crawling.
  • A good sense of spatial awareness.
  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts, vibration, dust, noise level.
  • Must be able to handle heavy materials and tools.
