Cross-Cultural Competence Program
The Cross-Cultural Competence (C3) Educator Program supports educators in building resilient cultural identities while reflecting on the lens through which they view their students and communities, their relationship-building, and their teaching practices. C3 guides participants through a cultural induction program that includes a cultural immersion experience, supportive gatherings during the school year, a graduate-level university course, and community mentorship.   Educators who come through C3 gain the tools, support, and confidence to sustainably build welcoming school spaces that reflect and honor the cultures of their communities.


Position Summary
The C3 Program Manager will manage the Alaska Humanities Alaska Humanities Forum’s portion of the Ilisautri (Teacher) Project with the Northwest Arctic Borough School District (NWABSD), with specific emphasis on cultivating and supporting cohorts of educators and community partners. The Manager will also support the Bristol Bay Teaching and Learning collaborative working with the Bristol Bay Foundation, and will be an integral part of envisioning the development of new education and cross-cultural programs at the Alaska Humanities Forum.   The right candidate will have a passion for, and proven experience in, cross-cultural work, program development, collaborative partnerships, and working with rural communities in Alaska. This position will report to the Director of C3 Programs.

Essential Job Duties
Program Management

  • Cultivate strong relationships with program partners and participants across Alaska
  • Oversee the search for and onboarding of a C3 course instructor and support co-development of a syllabus for course, with partner input
  • Recruit for, build, and support cohort of educators 
  • Ensure program meets goals outlined in grant and draft monthly performance reports
  • Draft and manage contracts
  • Work with Director of Development & Communications to support building a C3
    communications plan

Budget Management

  • Manage AKHF’s portion of the Ilisautri program budget, including drafting budget narratives and amendments with support from Director of C3 Programs and VP of Programs

Staff Management

  • Supervise and support part-time Kotzebue Coordinator (based in Kotzebue)

Development, Facilitation, and Continuous Improvement

  • Lead the design and facilitation of gatherings for Ilisautri educator participants, both virtual and in-person
  • Ensure program events follow the Alaska Humanities Forum’s preferred methodologies for gathering, such as The Art of Hosting, World Cafe, and other models of convening and dialogue
  • Contribute to Alaska Humanities Forum team of facilitators by facilitating C3 Program and Alaska Humanities Forum internal convenings as opportunities arise
  • Participate in annual professional development to enhance skills in project design and facilitation 
  • Present at statewide education conferences
  • Co-develop new program components to help deepen teacher connections within and across regions, including for C3 program alumni engagement
  • Collaborate with Director of C3 Programs, Vice President of Programs, and other program managers to develop new programming in response to need, funding opportunities, and Alaska Humanities Forum capacity
  • Envision opportunities to strategically expand cross-cultural work beyond education sector and across Alaska 
  • Support efforts to seek funding for new and existing initiatives by offering insight into Alaska’s educational landscape
  • Support writing new program grants through partner engagement, research and
    information coordination


Program Coordination

  • Host monthly partner meetings
  • Perform data collection, project evaluation and reporting functions, including logging participant information and activities
  • Participate in weekly Alaska Humanities Forum staff meetings and team meetings
  • Travel to summer culture camps in Northwest Arctic Region and Bristol Bay Region and act as Alaska Humanities Forum staff representative, as opportunities arise
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Must support and believe in the mission of the Alaska Humanities Alaska Humanities Forum;
  • Must be committed to supporting an equitable and inclusive organizational culture;
  • Must have an understanding of the history, dynamics and challenges of Western education in rural Alaska;
  • Must have own transportation, driver’s license, and reliable personal vehicle;
  • Must be able to pass state and federal background checks

Education/Training

  • Applicant must have experience working in Alaska (outside of Anchorage) and experience coordinating large in-person gatherings. Experience working in Northwest Arctic preferred.
  • Applicant must be an experienced facilitator and conversation designer
  • Applicant must have demonstrated experience successfully planning and managing a project that takes place in rural Alaska
  • Applicant must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs;
  • Must be comfortable traveling in small (6-seater) airplanes and boats;
  • Comfortable driving participants in rental vehicles
  • Ability to participate in virtual meetings for up to four hours with short breaks;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, G-Suite, Zoom.

Conditions of Employment

The C3 Program Manager role is an exempt, full-time position based at Alaska Humanities Alaska Humanities Forum offices in Anchorage with a regular weekday work schedule of 40 hours per week. This position will involve some weekends & evenings. Benefits include medical, dental, disability, ten paid holidays per year, nine earned paid time off hours each pay period, paid family leave, and a 403(b)-retirement plan.  The annual salary for this position will be $60,000 to $70,000 per year.
