Position Summary:
The University of Alaska Office of Information Technology is seeking a Systems Engineer to join our Platforms, Applications, and Web Services department. On this remote team you would work among a diverse set of professionals that are passionate about enabling life changing, cost-efficient postsecondary education that adapts to the learning needs of Alaskans and pioneering visitors from around the globe. An excellent candidate would be a strong systems administrator with software engineering expertise, focused on service monitoring and improvement, and experienced in Lean / Agile project management and DevOps practices.

Duties:
1-30Engineering & Development: You perform tasks requiring expertise and/or specialized knowledge in both information systems and non-information systems technical disciplines, including utilization of standard procedures/policies and non-standard procedures. You adjust to constant business change; such as new requirements, evolving goals and strategies, and emerging technologies. Require the ability to interact, develop, engineer, and communicate collaboratively at the highest technical levels with clients, vendors, partners, and all levels of University staff. You serve as a subject matter expert for scripting on Unix/Linux/Mac/Windows server/desktop environments utilizing a variety of programming languages to enhance system productivity. Additionally, you perform custom application development and scripting as per customer request or organization needs to enhance performance or user experience across the University System.Essential 25Configuration Management and Architecture Design: You are responsible for the design, installation, configuration, and maintenance of systems crucial to supporting University departments and business processes. You are involved in the full life cycle of an application. Responsible for the design and implementation of applications' build, release, deployment, and configuration activities, including working with internal business partners to gather requirements, prototyping, architecting, implementing/updating solutions, building and executing test plans, performing quality reviews, managing operations, and triaging and fixing operational issues. This includes business continuity, disaster recovery, and monitoring of the service. You develop configurations, policies, and monitoring solutions that promote efficiency and productivity while ensuring compliance with University standards.Essential 3-20Operational Support: You are responsible for the successful operation and management of core applications and platforms of the University System. You serve as a subject matter expert or project lead for major system operation upgrades and changes. You serve as the tier II support for many services maintained by our team. You participate in on-call rotation to provide after hours support for critical incidents as needed.Essential 4-20Project Management & Planning: You work closely with clients and IT team members to understand the departmental stakeholder requirements that drive the analysis and design of quality technical solutions using agile processes. These solutions must be aligned with University and IT strategies and compliant with architectural standards. You consult with and advise unit/department staff of complex problems, innovative approaches and new technologies. You independently identify risks and opportunities with no pre-existing processes or resolutions and draft projects or policies for higher level approval.Essential 5Documentation and Communication: You develop and maintain technical and administrative documentation, publications and organization policy, ensuring new applications are documented prior to deployment. On day one, you'll need:


Experience as a systems administrator and in software engineering, focused on service monitoring and improvement.


Experience in Lean / Agile project management and DevOps practices.


Experience with automation software, like Chef, Puppet, or similar.


Experience with CI/CD Pipelines, such as Git and automated testing tools such as Travis-CI, Jenkins, or similar, along with orchestrating deployments for continuous delivery.


Experience using various programming languages such as Ruby, Python, Perl, Java, C/C++, and a strong grasp of at least one language.


Strong understanding of full-stack web development. Familiarity with JavaScript, CSS3, HTML5 and various frameworks and libraries. (Django, RAILS, Flask, Phoenix, NodeJS, etc.).


Several years experience with Windows Server and Linux platforms.


Strong understanding of Active Directory.


Demonstrated advanced knowledge of computer networking


Experience with VMWare vSphere, vCenter Server, Horizon View, and ESXi.


Experience with NetApp, 3PAR, DataDomain, or other enterprise storage systems.


Proven ability to identify and resolve complex problems.


Knowledge of security best practices, along with intrusion detection and prevention techniques.


Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.


Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, with experience developing and instilling a culture of operational maturity.

It's even better if you have:


Experience understanding database design and SQL. NoSQL DB experience is a plus but not required.


Experience with Cloud. A track record with AWS preferred, but OpenStack, Google and Azure also of interest.


Experience with one or more of the following Languages: Java, Kotlin, Python.


Experience with Database administration. Managing Aurora/Postgres infrastructure will be highly valued.


Experience in microservice architecture.


Experience in Site Reliability Engineering and/or operating large scale systems.


Experience building monitoring into your code, tweaking dashboards, defining alerts, writing runbooks.
