Bean's Cafe, Inc., in service since 1979, exists to fight hunger for all ages, one meal at a time while providing a pathway to self-sufficiency with dignity and respect. 

We currently operate the temporary mass emergency shelter at the Sullivan Arena; providing a safe, clean, comfortable environment for our clients. This includes three meals per day, showers, laundry, a medical clinic, and a community resource hub and navigation team to assist individuals in exiting shelter permanently. 

The Children's Lunchbox, a program of Bean's Cafe has been in operation since 2006 and is focused on feeding hungry and food-insecure children and families. We do this through various methods, including our pantry pack, weekend food, and summer food programs.

Position Summary: 

The Monitor position is responsible for ensuring a safe and sound communal environment for Bean’s Cafe’s Emergency Shelter, which includes continuous communication with the fellow team members. Essential job duties encompass the Monitor’s role as leader, monitor, and supporter.  The Monitor maintains loyalty to the organization, its beliefs, values, mission, vision and expectations. 

Responsibilities & Duties: 

  • Provide a calm presence, is alert and observant at all times. 
  • Check-in clients, assign cots, and address issues regarding a client’s property. 
  • Hold a basic understanding of every Monitor Post within the Shelter. 
  • Participate in the general daily routine of the Monitors, including rotating positions for proper coverage, enforcing policies, and ensuring the safety of clients, staff, and volunteers. 
  • Alert Lead / Safety Monitor, Monitor Supervisor, or Site-Managers of any building maintenance issues, and any client safety or security issues. 
  • Maintain tracking systems for data reports as required by management and law enforcement agencies. 
  • Attend and participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings and training. 
  • Direct and assist in maintaining order with the clients in the Shelter and on Shelter property, including policy enforcement. 
  • Support in the supervision for keeping the shelter clean and safe. 
  • Assist with answering the telephones. 
  • Assists with, and perform shift-duties as assigned by the Lead/Safety Monitor on shift at the Shelter. 
  • Maintain in a professional courteous presence.  This includes personal grooming and general presence. 
  • Support Beans Cafe policies and procedures.  
  • May perform other duties and job responsibilities as assigned by Supervisors.

  • Ability to represent self in a professional manner when assisting clients, volunteers, donors and co-workers.

  • Ability to work with a diverse population including, but not limited to: underprivileged adults, mental health issues, substance abuse issues, and domestic abuse issues. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to make reasonable and sound decisions; respond in real time to situations on site. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain a high degree of professional conduct at all times. 
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision. 
  • Basic computer skills. 
  • Ability to prioritize, problem solve and resolve day-to-day issues as they arise, including being able to act quickly in a crisis, whether it is related to a client or the organization. 
  • Foster a climate of cooperation and respect between co-workers. 
  • At least 18 years of age. 
  • Legal right to work in the United States. 
  • Undergo a criminal background check and/or willingness to disclose criminal background.  
  • Ability to effectively speak, read, and write in English. 
  • Have and/or have access to a dependable vehicle/transportation. 
  • Prior security/monitor experience or in a similar job position is preferred. 

Physical Demands: 

  • Must be able to work in inclement weather. 
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds from the ground up. 
  • Must be able to climb stairs. 
  • Physically able to stand for at least 8 hours.
