Position Summary:
The Institute of Arctic Biology (IAB; founded in 1963) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks invites applications for Institute Director. The Institute Director supervises approximately 45 faculty, many of whom hold joint appointments with the College of Natural Science and Mathematics, and 10 research faculty. Additionally, the director oversees the administration of research support for approximately 70 graduate students. The Director provides leadership and guidance of research groups within IAB, advocacy and program development for the institute, and administrative management and oversight of IAB budget and personnel. Research within the IAB includes life sciences of wildlife, physiology, genetics and evolutionary biology, ecology and ecosystems, biomedicine, and bioinformatics and computational biology. IAB is a global leader in high latitude research, and the location of the institute provides strategic advantage for cutting edge research. In addition, IAB is home to the Bonanza Creek Long-Term Ecological Research program, the Center for Alaska Native Health Research, the Center for Transformative Research in Metabolism, the Toolik Field Station, and the USGS Alaska cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, as well as an array of individual investigator-driven research. External funding to the Institute exceeds $20M annually, and is supported by both federal and state agencies such as NSF, NIH, USGS, NASA, and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
• Significant knowledge, experience, and understanding of business operations and management.
• Knowledge of processes related to field work.
• Effectively advocate for IAB and the university including attracting funding from external sources.
• Create a productive research environment for faculty, staff and students
• Recruit and retain quality faculty and staff, particularly members of underrepresented groups.
• Stay current with advancing developments in applied and translational science research.
• Communicate clearly and effectively in written and oral formats.
Preferred Experience & Education:
• Experience in attracting funding for multidisciplinary research and in building and leading successful multidisciplinary teams;
• Experience working with private and public organizations and constituencies
• A strong track record in science research as evidenced by a history of publications, professional activities, funded grant support, etc.;
• Well-documented evidence of substantial contributions to a discipline related to IAB programs;
• A record of excellence in research and service commensurate with rank of professor;
• A record of progressively responsible administrative positions, including a history of successful budgetary and fiscal administration; and
• Experience working in multicultural environments.
Required Experience & Education:
Ph.D in a science related field or relevant disciplines represented at IAB
Salary Information:
This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and https://alaska.edu/jobs/benefits.php. Salary is negotiable depending on experience and education.
