Assistant Professor of Nursing

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, NURSING: Alaska Pacific University (APU) invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Nursing with demonstrated professional experience and desire to work on the development of new nursing programs and curriculum to meet the needs of Alaska, with emphasis on the needs of Alaska Native people and rural communities.

THE UNIVERSITY: APU is a small, private liberal arts university, known for experiential and project-based learning. The university campus is in Anchorage, Alaska, a diverse city and home to more than 300,000 residents. THE PROGRAM AREAS: APU currently offers the ‘AK Bridge’ RN-to-BSN degree in a fully online format. The associate degree in nursing is under development and the program will begin in the 2020 Fall semester. In addition to teaching courses, this position will hold a strong role in assisting with the development of curriculum, curriculum evaluation and other processes in alignment with acquiring and retaining ACEN accreditation. The programs are housed in APU’s Institute of Health & Wellness, along with other health-related and behavioral health programs. The programs utilize diverse delivery formats and are grounded in principles of cultural safety and cultural competence utilizing evidence-based assessment. They are developed by and for Alaska Native people to advance the best possible nursing care and care outcomes for individuals, communities, and organizations.  The faculty member hired for this position will be join the team working on curriculum development in nursing in a wide variety of subjects.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The position includes a 9 to 12-month contract, typically teaching 3-4 courses semester, with course release for administrative responsibilities such as curriculum and partnership development. Course assignments may fall within the content areas of cultural safety, ethics, informatics, leadership, and/or other nursing related-studies based upon the faculty member’s expertise. All faculty are encouraged to develop professional expertise or scholarship in their chosen field, and faculty are expected to participate in outcomes assessment, curriculum development, advising, student activities, and other services to the university and broader community.

SALARY: Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience and is proscribed by a university-wide salary range. APU is a non-tenure college; faculty are eligible for multiyear appointments after initial contracts.


QUALIFICATIONS: To meet accreditation standards, candidates must have a graduate degree in nursing; licensure in AK preferred. Candidates should be able to demonstrate expertise in a core competency area related to nurse education and/or community health. Successful candidates include those with proficiency in nurse supervision, leadership, curriculum and program development, teaching and mentoring, or those with extensive professional experience and clinical practice. Candidates who can demonstrate expertise in both teaching and professional skills are preferred.
