Position Summary:

Come join an award-winning program at ANSEP. We are recruiting Youth Peer Mentors for the 2022-23 academic year to support our Acceleration Academy component in Palmer, Alaska at the Mat-Su College.

Duties:

Compliance Adhere to, enforce, and ensure compliance with various university, federal, state, and local rules, policies, procedures, regulations, and processes. Participate in staff training around the various rules, policies, procedures, regulations, and processes. Participate in staff training around ANSEP risk management protocols. Coordinate and participate in compliance and risk training aimed at ANSEP students. Report student conduct and behavior issues to senior ANSEP staff. Ensure risk management goals and processes are met.

Residence Life Oversee, direct, coordinate, and plan student residence life experiences. ANSEP students reside at UAA dorms while enrolled in various ANSEP components. Youth Peer Mentors are responsible for ensuring that ANSEP housing and dorm related rules and policies are followed, including that curfew, dining, and catering standards are met. Some Youth Peer Mentors may be required to work evenings and weekends in order to support residence life activities.

Student Educational Activities Oversee, direct, coordinate, and plan educational related student activities. ANSEP students are engaged in education related student activities primarily during the day, and include credit and noncredit courses and activities. Youth Peer Mentors are responsible for ensuring students attend various activities, and are engaged with the instructors, teachers, or faculty who are leading the courses and activities. Youth Peer Mentors are responsible for ensuring that ANSEP students attend and are engaged in weekly recitation study sessions.

Sudent Extracurricular Activities Oversee, direct, coordinate, and plan extracurricular activities. ANSEP students are engaged in extracurricular activities primarily in the afternoons, evenings, and weekends. The activities include team building, exercise, and other fun activities like rock climbing, go-karts, and paintball. Youth Peer Mentors are responsible for ensuring that students attend the various activities and that they are engaged and follow instructions and adhere to risk protocols.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Evidence of leadership, work ethic, integrity, and high moral standards. Knowledge of or experience with rural Alaska culture, lifestyles, and challenges. Knowledge of or experience supporting youth in an education setting. Evidence of the ability to communicate effectively. Evidence of the ability to work as an effective team member.

TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

One year prior experience working with or overseeing students in residence programs is preferred.

REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:

High school graduation required. Minimum of 20 university credits successfully completed is required. Successful completion of college level math, chemistry, or physics coursework is preferred.

 

This is a full-time, term-funded, Grade 75, (minimum $17.16/hr) DOE, 9-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package.

ANSEP is 3,000 Alaska Native middle school students, high school students, university students, and ANSEP alumni. ANSEP: improves academic outcomes, eliminates the need for university remediation and associated costs for government and families, increases retention, saves students and their families two years or more of college tuition and living expenses, saves the state millions in government funding by reducing time to degree, allows students to earn up to three years or more of university credits for a baccalaureate degree while in high school.

 

This position is a term-funded position and is reviewed annually for contract renewal at the University's discretion.
