Position Summary:

The University of Alaska Anchorage is seeking applications for a Senior Development Officer at the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). This position will work closely with the dean to develop and execute strategic fundraising initiatives, focusing on major gifts. The successful candidate will have 5+ years of fundraising experience. UAA's College of Arts and Sciences is the largest academic unit within the University of Alaska. It is home to over 4,000 students and 208 prominent full-time faculty working at the forefronts of their fields. Located in breathtaking Anchorage, Alaska, UAA is a beautiful workplace!

Duties:

Other Responsibilities: - Make and communicate decisions in regard to the establishment and maintenance of University-wide priorities in development. - Administrative duties include briefings and coordination of solicitation meetings, development travel, and University leadership briefings. - Authorize expenditures and plan college budget for representational expenses related to development. - Act as liaison between Dean's Office and University Advancement. - Attend Advancement, College, Foundation and other meetings as necessary. - Other duties as assigned.

Planning and Leadership: - Design College of Arts and Sciences development plan annually in alignment with University and Advancement goals, and in concert with UAA's strategic plan. Plan will include a variety of vehicles, including major gifts coordination with annual giving, planned giving, stewardship and alumni cultivation. - Conceptualize individual fund raising strategies to include prospect identification, discovery or qualification visits; cultivation plans; and solicitation of specific amounts. Implement, regularly assess and adjust the strategies to successfully meet specific program needs and realize strategic opportunities and annual goals. - Act as an expert resource for the dean to identify, research, and analyze how alumni, friends of the university, volunteers, and related industry partners' resources and interests apply to their programs, missions and priorities. - Serve as an expert resource to division directors, department chairs and administrative staff on all aspects of development, from prospect calls to the acknowledgement process. Arrange related cultivation and solicitation meetings and activities for Chancellor and other University staff.

Stewardship: - Coordinate with the Annual Giving Officer and Donor Relations Officer on prospect strategies, gift completion and gift acknowledgement. - In cooperation with the Donor Relations Officer, create, review and execute stewardship strategies for current donors that will lead to increased and continued support. - Coordinate with University of Advancement and College Dean to plan donor receptions, issue press releases and coordinate other forms of donor recognition.

Cultivation/Solicitation: - Conduct frequent face-to-face visits with donors and prospective donors over the course of a year to lead to new, renewed or increased gifts. Visits may include discovery, cultivation, solicitation or stewardship visits. Regularly set up meetings for the dean with donors, providing donor background and meeting objectives. - Prepare and present convincing appeals/requests/proposals to donors. - Solicit and secure gifts ranging from high-end annual gifts to gifts that are large in complexity and scope. Meet the fundraising goals identified in an annual plan and agreed to by the Director of Development, the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Development, and the College Dean. - Cultivate and solicit planned gifts. - Represent the University to various community organizations and individuals to build relationships for future gifts. Serve as an expert resource on all development activities while working with executive-level stakeholders, corporations and boards. - Work with Annual Giving Officer to strengthen annual giving, particularly among alumni. Align unit development activities with the programs and services of UAA's Development Office. - May write grants to foundations or corporations for philanthropic support. - Work with executive level volunteers with the goal of cultivating them toward future gifts or working them as natural partners to cultivate and solicit other gifts. - Record visits through contact reports (CRs) and enter CRs and proposals for Raiser's Edge reporting in a timely basis.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Demonstrated success or aptitude in solicitation of major gifts and success in fund raising.

CFRE Certification preferred.

Advanced understanding of the motivations of individuals to give philanthropically and an ability to cultivate, solicit and steward individuals based on their philanthropic interests.

TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of five years professional level (or higher) experience in corporate, foundation, non-profit, or university setting.

REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:

Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, public relations, business, public administration or relevant field or an equivalent combination of training and experience, including exposure to higher education. Extensive development training and experience in higher education, foundations, corporations or non-profits, regardless of educational attainment, is also acceptable.

 

This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 81, based on education and experience.
