General Functions:

The NYO Anchorage Coach provides comprehensive coaching and mentorship to Alaska Native and American Indian youth athletes in grades 7th-12th participating in the Anchorage A and B teams established during the Anchorage Tryouts competition. This position teaches traditional Native Youth Olympic games while instilling cultural values, sportsmanship, and athletic excellence in student athletes. Working in partnership with our people, the NYO Anchorage Coach develops opportunities that fulfill our endless potential by preserving cultural traditions through sport and fostering personal growth in young athletes. The role requires expertise in NYO competition rules, cultural knowledge, and youth development that aligns with CITC's mission and values.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coach and mentor Anchorage A and B team athletes in Native Youth Olympic games, teaching skills, strategies, and cultural significance of each event.
  • Plan and lead practice sessions to develop athletes' technical skills, physical conditioning, and competition readiness.
  • Determine top performers in each round of competition based on established NYO criteria and judging standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of competition results, practice attendance, and athlete performance data.
  • Provide real-time feedback and coaching during Senior NYO Games and other competitive events.
  • Mentor athletes to develop sportsmanship, respect for traditional games, cultural relevance, and proper conduct on and off the competition floor.
  • Maintain equipment and facilities to ensure safe practice environments and proper care of traditional gaming materials.
  • Attend NYO Tryouts, Senior NYO Games, coaches' meetings, and NYO Athlete Celebration events as required.
  • Coordinate meal breaks and logistical support for athletes during multi-day Senior NYO Games competitions.
  • Complete registration and waiver forms for Anchorage A and B team participants, ensuring compliance with program requirements.
  • Motivate and encourage athletes to improve performance while maintaining focus on cultural education and personal development.
  • Perform all related duties as needed and assigned.

Job Specifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to provide clear instructions to groups of various sizes and ages.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of rules, regulations, and judging criteria for each Native Youth Olympic event.
  • Working knowledge of the most recent NYO handbook and competition procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and as a contributory team member in a positive, productive manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to use sound judgment when interacting with staff and participants of various ages and backgrounds in a non-judgmental manner.
  • Proven ability to perform under pressure while handling multiple priorities simultaneously and effectively.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native and American Indian community.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Continued employment is contingent upon completion of satisfactory state and federal fingerprint criminal background check.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience coaching Native Youth Olympics with high school aged athletes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous competitive experience in Native Youth Olympic games.
  • Experience working with Alaska Native and American Indian youth in educational or athletic settings.

Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Good manual dexterity.
  • Standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently, by utilizing proper lifting techniques and working in a safe manner.
  • The ability to wear the appropriate PPE.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, and reaching, kneeling, crouching, crawling.
  • A good sense of spatial awareness.
  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts, vibration, dust, noise level.
  • Must be able to handle heavy materials and tools.
