                                                                                               ASSISTANT CONTROLLER

Reports to: Controller
Status: Regular, Full-time, Exempt
Location: Anchorage, AK

PURPOSE: The Assistant Controller is a key member of the accounting team responsible for supporting financial operations, reporting, compliance, and internal controls. This role contributes to the accuracy and integrity of financial data, assists with audits, and supports leadership in financial planning and analysis.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Champion Aleut Values of accountability, transparency, and rigor in all financial practices.
  • Provide strategic oversight of the accounting function, directing managers and senior staff to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Oversee month-end, year-end, and close processes, ensuring compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements.
  • Establish and maintain robust internal controls and governance frameworks across all accounting operations.
  • Guide budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis initiatives to support executive decision-making and organizational strategy.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for internal and external audits, ensuring accountability and transparency.
  • Deliver actionable financial insights and reports to executive leadership to inform strategic planning.
  • Drive process improvements and system enhancements to optimize efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of financial operations.
  • Mentor and develop accounting leadership, fostering a culture of continuous learning and high performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and subsidiaries to ensure consistent financial practices and compliance.
  • Oversee accounting system integrations and enterprise-wide data flows to maintain operational integrity.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and ensure organizational adherence across all entities.
  • Partner with the Controller and executive leadership to align financial strategy with business goals.

ASSISTANT CONTROLLER ADDENDUM PAYROLL & ACCOUNTS PAYABLE

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee and/or process accurate and timely payroll, tax filings, benefit remittances, and internal controls for multi-state payroll, including garnishments, benefit deductions and overtime calculations.
  • Ensure compliance with payroll tax regulations, wage laws, and related reporting requirements.
  • Lead payroll related audits
  • Prepare monthly reconciliations and assist with month end close as needed.
  • Oversee vendor relationships with third-party payroll providers & vendors (e.g., UKG, Fidelity, ADP, MetLife, State of Alaska, etc), ensuring service quality and compliance.
  • Excellent understanding of payroll tax regulations and reporting (W-2s, 941s, etc)
  • Manage payroll integrations with HRIS systems to ensure accurate flow of employee data.
  • Lead accounts payable operations, ensuring timely invoice processing, effective vendor management, and accurate subledger reconciliations.
  • Ensure timely and accurate 1099 reporting and related compliance.
  • Establish and maintain payroll and AP internal controls to mitigate fraud risk and strengthen compliance.
  • Lead and develop payroll and AP staff through training, mentorship, and professional development.
  • Prepare and support internal and external audits related to payroll and AP functions.
  • Partner with IT and finance to implement and optimize system upgrades (e.g., ERP, payroll software).
  • Develop standardized dashboards and KPIs to measure payroll accuracy, processing efficiency, and AP cycle time.
  • Generate ad-hoc reports on payroll costs, cash disbursements, and related financial metrics.
  • Support cash flow forecasting by managing the timing of disbursements and payroll runs

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and accounting systems.
  • Solid knowledge of GAAP, best practices, and reporting standards.
  • Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations.
  • Skilled in financial analysis and report preparation.
  • Strong leadership with ability to manage and mentor teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and discretion with confidential information.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and deadline-driven.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Experience with financial and payroll software (e.g., Sage Intacct, ADP, UKG).
  • Focused on continuous improvement and process efficiency.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance from a four-year accredited university/college.
  2. Five (5) years of progressive accounting experience to include:
  3. Experience in payroll operations, financial reporting, or multi-entity accounting.
  4. Two (2) years of supervisory experience
  5. Experience with Sage Intacct, ADP, UKG, Odoo, PrintBoss, MAS90

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Current CPA or CMA license
  2. Knowledge of Alaska Native Corporations
