Animal Control Officer: Anchorage Animal Care & Control ($1,000 Signing Bonus!)

Animal Control Officers are responsible for capturing and impounding dangerous or stray animals, investigating cases of animal cruelty, enforcing licensing laws, providing expert testimony in court cases, rescuing trapped animals, preparing incident reports, and providing humane care to animals under their supervision. Animal Control Officers work under limited supervision from the Enforcement Supervisor, and response to requests for animal control service is accordance with Anchorage Municipal Code Title 17.

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum six months code, law enforcement, or security experience to include carrying out law(s) through investigations, interviewing witnesses, collecting evidence, writing citations and reports
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Current Alaska driver’s license with clean driving record
  • Able to proficiently speak, read, understand and write English


  • Investigate complaints on violations of Municipal Code Title 17
  • Impound and issue citations to animals in accordance with Municipal Code Title 17
  • Pursue, capture and control aggressive and dangerous animals using safety equipment and special techniques
  • Respond to injured domestic animal assistance and move deceased animals
  • Maintain record of daily activity and prepare reports as required
  • Educate the public on animal control ordinances including licensing and rabies requirements, and animal welfare
  • Provide relief for radio dispatching
  • Prepare cases for administrative hearings and court and testify when necessary
  • Ensure cleanliness, maintenance, and safe operations of vehicles
  • Respond to request for assistance from other agencies in accordance with established service priorities
  • Handle all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, including those that may be sick, injured, or feral, regardless of situation or circumstance
  • Assist other departments of Anchorage Animal Care and Control
  • Maintain healthy, safe, sanitary, pleasant and clean facilities for all animals housed at AACCC using cleaners and disinfectants with chemical agents per MSDS guidelines
  • Provide information to the public; promote good animal care and responsible pet ownership
  • Follow established procedures governing safe work practices including, but not limited to, wearing protective equipment when necessary; perform duties in a manner which assures the safety of oneself and others; and attend all designated training sessions
  • Maintain equipment in compliance with industry standards
  • Participate in regular or special training to upgrade or improve job skills, knowledge, performance or professionalism
  • Always treat animals and people with respect; contribute to effective teamwork; work cooperatively with and assist other staff and volunteers; and advance public relations beneficial to AACCC
  • Ability to work in a constant state of alertness in a safe manner
  • Willingness to perform other duties as required
  • Willingness to work at various locations as required

The employee will be required to work in a variety of environments including, but not limited to:

  • Indoor/office: customer service and kennel area (noisy, odorous environment)

The employee’s work requires routine walking, standing, bending and carrying items. Maintain a degree of physical capability and agility which may involve quickly entering and exiting vehicles; running, lifting, carrying and dragging heavy objects; climbing over and pulling oneself over obstacles; jumping down from elevated surfaces; climbing through openings, jumping over obstacles; crawling in confined areas; balancing on uneven or narrow surfaces; walking or standing for long periods; and operation of a motor vehicle. Employee must be able to lift 50 pounds.
