Job Title:          Life-Skills/Workplace Competencies Instructor

Department:    Employment & Training Services Department (ETSD)

Reports To:      Case Management Coordinator

Supervises:       None

FLSA Status:    Non-Exempt

General Functions:

The Life-Skills /Workplace Competencies Instructor works with participants in both group and individual settings with the goal of enhancing their ability to obtain and maintain employment.  The Instructor will provide culturally appropriate motivational training in the areas of: identifying strengths, identifying and applying transferable skills, recognizing and transferring rural work experiences to the urban job market, how to navigate and be successful in an urban setting, using values and traditions to build and recognize strengths and self worth, goal setting, decision making, budgeting for success, workplace dress, workplace communication, assertiveness and self-concept, shopping and nutrition, parenting during change, boundary setting, relationship building, job-search strategies (resume, interviewing, & job search) and other identified areas of need to aid the participant’s progress into self sufficiency.  

 

The Life-Skills Instructor may lead job club activities and develop participant support and mentoring groups.  The Instructor may use traditional and workplace standards to stimulate learning and employability skills. In addition, the Instructor will conduct assessments to identify strengths, aptitudes, abilities, motor skills, career planning, academic levels, and other assessments that guide the participant in sound career and employment planning and attainment.  The Departments’ common goal is to “walk” with participants as they develop strength and skills to secure long-term employment. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Work with Case Managers, Employment & Training Center Staff, State of Alaska Employment Specialists, Tribal Vocational Rehabilitation and other CITC staff to identify life skill gaps and job skills which need to be addressed for the participant to make progress toward employment.
  • Promote and models goal setting, employment and workplace etiquette/ethics, and decision-making skills via individual mentoring or group classes.
  • Model and mentor healthy communication techniques, boundary setting in personal and work life.
  • Identify gaps in healthy life skill classes, groups or mentoring programs that incorporate traditional cultural strengths and values.
  • Design, mentor, instruct, or refer to other community resources in the identified life skill gaps which interfere in self sufficiency progress of participants.
  • Motivate and reinforce new patterns of behavior to better ensure participant progress.
  • Facilitate and administer life skills curriculum in one-on-one or group settings.
  • Maintain confidentiality according to regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform all other related duties as needed and assigned.

Minimum Core Competencies: CITC Values, Respectful Leadership, Professionalism, Emotional Intelligence, Problem Solving/Critical Thinking, Communication Skills.

 

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree and two (2) years experience as a case manager, job coach, work adjustor or life skills instructor.  Experience maybe substituted for the education requirement on a year-for year basis.
  • Experience in teaching adults in a classroom or workshop setting.
  • Valid Alaska Driver’s license and insurable under CITC automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age and have had a driver’s license for at least three years.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory report from a state and federal background check.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in the field of Adult or Vocational Education.
  • Experience in social services or non-profit settings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge Alaska Native and American Indian values and belief systems
  • Demonstrated ability to provide culturally competent services.

 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Primarily works in an office setting, with extended periods of time at a desk and on a computer.
