Position Summary:

Seeking a driven educator to provide quality instruction that meets the needs of adult learners in Cordova, Alaska. The job responsibilities include teaching English to speakers of other languages and preparing students for the GED, citizenship exam, and college.

 

Duties:

10OUTREACH *Develop relationships with individuals in local human service organizations for outreach, referrals, and student case management as well as refer students representing special populations needing local services. *Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the public.Essential 15RECRUITMENT *Prepare and conduct Adult Education and GED recruitment and instruction via in-person and distance at various outreach sites in the Valdez/Cordova region for adults, older youth, and at-risk and special needs students. *Complete and submit data and reports on activities, number of students served, and contact hours for funding sources.Essential 30CREATE STUDENT EDUCATION PLANS *Establish and maintain individual education plans for each student through assessment, interviews, and analysis to determine appropriate instructional strategies for student success. *Complete all intake procedures for each student, including assessment, document student progress and performance, and follow-up on goals. *Enter data monthly, ensuring compliance with state and federal grant requirements and funding sources. *Maintain student files according to grant requirements. Ensure compliance with state, federal, and campus rules. regulations, and policies.Essential 45GED & ADULT EDUCATION INSTRUCTION/TUTORING *Organize, prepare, and teach GED subjects (English, math, social studies, and science), literacy, English as a Second Language, and life and job skills based on an individual plan of instruction. Deliver instruction either one-on-one or in small groups in campus and online. *Assess students' academic levels, learning challenges, and goals to determine appropriate instructional strategies for student success. *Create original and modify instructional materials/content and utilize standards-based curriculum. Participate in professional development activities to stay current with best instructional practices. *Works with the Valdez Adult Education Director to create social media content.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

*Excellent written and oral communication skills

*Knowledge of characteristics of adult learners, at-risk youth, different learning modalities, and adults with learning disabilities.

*Knowledge of and ability to utilize best practices in the instruction of adults and at-risk youth in the classroom, individually and in small groups.

*Ability to prepare and/or modify individualized educational materials.

*Ability to maintain student files according to federal, state, and program requirements.

*Knowledge of and ability to practice effective teaching methods, techniques, and strategies; interpersonal skills; collaboration; and organizational skills.

*Position requires skillful presentation of material to a diverse population of students who may have multiple barriers such as learning disabilities, substance abuse problems, and/or poorly-developed life and and employability skills.

 

Preferred:

Well-developed ability to plan, manage, and deliver classroom and individualized instruction both face-to-face and online. Knowledge of multilevel academic and teaching strategies.

 

Typical Experience:

*One year or equivalent teaching or tutoring English and/or math.

*Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

*Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail for student intake, tracking student data, maintaining files, grant reports, and student progress.

*Experience with online education and social media platforms.

 

Preferred:

*Teaching experience utilizing instructional technology

*Experience in a position requiring effective interpersonal and communication skills, developing relationships and collaborating with students, staff, human service agencies, and the public.

*Previous experience or training in adult basic education.

 

Required Education or Training:

Must be a high school graduate with experience in teaching and/or tutoring.

 

A BA in education, adult education, math, English, or related field is preferred.

 

Salary Information:

 

This is a part-time, 12-month, non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and https://alaska.edu/jobs/benefits.php.
