NAMI Juneau is the local affiliate of the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. NAMI Juneau’s mission is to provide education, support, advocacy, and public awareness to help individuals affected by mental health conditions build better lives. The Program Coordinator oversees and coordinates a variety of mental health education and support programs for individuals affected by mental health conditions and supports the organization’s public awareness initiatives. The Program Coordinator reports to the NAMI Juneau Executive Director and works closely with staff and volunteers.

Position Responsibilities

The NAMI Juneau program coordinator is responsible for organizing and marketing NAMI support groups, trainings and classes while also implementing new outreach activities to promote mental wellness in Juneau.

Program Coordination

  • Coordinates NAMI Juneau’s peer education programs and support groups. This includes planning, scheduling, marketing and support for volunteers.
  • Coordinates Inside Passages, a seasonal speaker series. This includes securing speakers, finding a location for the event (in-person or online), marketing, and communicating with attendees.
  • Processes Mental Health Mini-Grants for people with serious and persistent mental illness. This includes preparing and submitted applications to the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority as well as helping grantees shop for items.
  • Responds to participant inquiries for help navigating resources and community services.
  • Using input from colleagues, volunteers and community partners, develops new events/activities to promote mental health in Juneau.

Volunteer Coordination

  • Supports volunteer leadership teams by maintaining communication, providing networking and training opportunities, and acknowledging volunteer contributions.
  • Coordinates facilitator trainings which includes recruiting and screening applicants and planning all logistics for training events.
  • Supervises youth intern. The Youth Intern works two days a week with NAMI Juneau through the JobX program. Their role is to support the NAMI Juneau Program Coordinator.

Outreach Activities and Marketing

  • Plans and coordinates Mental Health Month (May) and Mental Illness Awareness Week (Oct) activities which may include workshops, art/film events, or other public awareness initiatives.
  • Prepares content for social media and monthly newsletters including mental illness recovery stories, current information related to mental health conditions, and local and statewide services and supports.
  • Attends public events to distribute mental health promotion materials.
  • Assists with NAMI Juneau fundraisers, annual meeting and other special events.
  • Maintains two listservs that facilitate communication between local human service professionals.

Administrative and Other Duties

  • Attend monthly JSPC and NAMI affiliate meetings.
  • Manages programmatic data collection and reporting to funders.
  • Participate in team meetings and actively support the efforts of coworkers.
  • Participate in staff equity and inclusion efforts.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with non-profit coordination and/or a deep commitment to working with and on behalf of those who live with mental health conditions and their loved ones.
  • Action-oriented, organized, and ready to take initiative on new and existing projects.
  • Ability to work both as a team member and independently.
  • Commitment to social justice, equity and service to others.
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills, particularly in marketing programs.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality with sensitive information including member, participant and volunteer information.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, cloud computing, and social media platforms.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or related experience.


  • Current driver’s license and auto insurance.
  • Clearance of state and federal background checks.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Other Details

  • NAMI Juneau relies on grant funds. The Program Coordinator position is fully funded through June
  • 30, 2022 and we anticipate continued funding thereafter.
