The Native Village of Eklutna is seeking an Environmental Technician to support the Land & Environment Department in meeting a wide range of departmental needs, including fisheries and watershed monitoring along the Eklutna River in Southcentral Alaska. The technician will also support the Food Security Department by assisting with garden maintenance, outreach activities, and community recycling events, among other projects.

The position includes a combination of fieldwork and office-based responsibilities. Field tasks may include salmon spawning surveys, minnow trapping, salmon genetic data collection, stream habitat assessments, water quality monitoring, and garden activities such as harvesting, planting, seeding, and weeding.

When not in the field, the technician will assist with data management, analysis, and other departmental projects as needed. Training will be provided for all technical and field-based tasks.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day and carry up to 40 lbs. of equipment.
• Ability to follow instructions and work both independently and as part of a team.
• Reliable, punctual, and able to maintain a positive work attitude.
• Good communication skills and willingness to assist with community outreach or events.
• Respect for Indigenous lands, culture, and community values.
• Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Valid U.S. driver’s license.
• Willingness to learn new field skills. Training is provided.
• Interest in gardening, agriculture, food security, or environmental land stewardship.
• Ability to perform physical outdoor work, including lifting, bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods

Preferred:

• 1-2 years of relevant education and/or experience in natural resources, environmental science, fisheries, biology, or a related field (including experience in the backcountry, wading in rivers or fishing).
• Experience collecting aquatic biological or physical data (fish, water quality, stream habitat surveys).
• Comfort wading in streams and working in remote settings.
• ATV/UTV experience.
• Experience working in bear country, or willingness to learn bear safety.
• First aid/CPR or Wilderness First Aid/Wilderness First Responder.
• Experience working in Alaska’s backcountry.
