UAA Biomaterials Lab is seeking graduate Research Assistant! Become part of the solution to plastic pollution by joining our research team developing bio-based alternatives to plastics! Student Research Assistant will work on grant-funded biomaterials projects. This position will be approximately 20 hours/week during the school year, starting in the 2022 Fall semester. 100Perform varied research tasks including keeping a lab logbook, maintaining fungal cultures and cell lines, conducting experiments, and collecting data. Will also assist in overall project management and procurement including ordering of the lab supply and equipment, assist with biomaterials testing, including biological, mechanical, and thermal properties analysis, contribute to drafting of reports, publications and presentations.Essential Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Ability to work independently, team player with an interest in sustainability and green materials. Experience in microbiology or/and materials properties testing are a plus. Knowledge of research methods. Ability to work closely with a team to coordinate project data collection activities. Ability to use computerized tools to organize and analyze information and communicate findings. Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology or related field and current enrollment in a graduate program at the University of Alaska.


Research Assistants must be enrolled in 6-9 graduate credits for the semester and maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA during their assistantship.

Salary Information:

Minimum Hourly Rate: $21.00

About the Division of Population Health Sciences:

The mission of the Division of Population Health Sciences is to advance health sciences through the educational opportunities of academic training, research, and community service in order to improve the well-being of the diverse peoples of Alaska and the circumpolar north.


Dr. Amstislavski's work centers on the nexus of Circumpolar public and environmental health. He teaches environmental health, statistics, and GIS/spatial analysis courses within the MPH Program. He also researches and develops biotechnologies to reduce our environmental footprint in high-latitude regions. His innovation in biomaterials is at the core of the Biomaterials Lab at UAA. He earned a PhD from the Earth and Environmental Sciences at the City University of New York and his master's degree from Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.
