The Alaska Public Defender Agency is hiring new and experienced attorneys for its Kodiak office to handle adult criminal, juvenile, parental defense, and commitment cases. Salaries for Agency attorneys vary by experience and location. Kodiak salaries vary from $99,918 - $149,818.50 annually. Benefits for permanent attorneys include paid leave, health insurance, two mandatory matching retirement accounts, and one optional deferred compensation retirement account.
The Alaska Public Defender Agency is a statewide public defense organization committed to the highest standards in indigent defense. We utilize a vertical representation model, with attorneys representing clients from the beginning of a case through trial. Attorneys handle all aspects of cases for our clients – advising clients on offers, filing motions, conducting evidentiary hearings, overseeing investigation, and conducting trials. Travel to remote Alaskan communities may be necessary. All travel expenses are covered by the State.
Applicants should be able to work in a fast-paced, high-volume practice and should possess strong writing, analytical, oral advocacy, and interpersonal skills. Applicants should be able to work independently to research and compose legal briefs and oral arguments. Applicants must be admitted to the Alaska Bar, be willing to sit for the next Alaska Bar exam, or be eligible for bar admission by reciprocity. Prior legal experience preferred.
