The establishment of an Indigenous Wellness Advocate position is vital for addressing the unique wellness needs of Indigenous students within our university community. This advocate brings cultural sensitivity and understanding to wellness support services, promoting holistic wellness by honoring Indigenous traditions and values. By building community, advocating for systemic change, and empowering students, the advocate contributes to creating a more inclusive and supportive university environment where Indigenous students can thrive academically, culturally, and personally.

 

To thrive in this role the applicant would need a strong commitment to advocating and helping Indigenous students establish holistic wellness practices. They should also have experience facilitating programming, working with student organizations and/or other community building involvement that exemplifies our mission to improve our sense of belonging and overall student wellbeing here at UAF.

In this role, you'll build and maintain relationships with Indigenous student groups, communities, and elders, organizing community events and activities that promote wellness, cultural preservation, and academic achievement. Additionally, you'll collaborate closely with Rural Student Services, Rural Alaska Honors Institute, and the Eileen Panigeo MacLean House. Minimum Qualifications:

 

Bachelor's degree in a related field such as Indigenous Studies, Social Work, Public Health, or a similar discipline preferred and/or two years of programming experience. Additional training or certification in cultural competency, counseling, or community engagement may be beneficial.

 

Previous experience working with Indigenous communities, preferably in a wellness or advocacy capacity.

 

Experience in event planning, community outreach, or program coordination.

 

Position Details:

 

This position is located on the Troth Yeddha campus in Fairbanks, AK. This is a full-time, term funded, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and https://www.alaska.edu/hr/benefits/support/prospectiveemployees.php. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the https://www.alaska.edu/hr/benefits/compensation/salary.php, Grade 78, based on education and experience.
