Position Summary:
The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) is seeking a Research Professional in Biological Oceanography (Phytoplankton). This position will be located in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Duties:
25%Field Work: Handling pre-cruise logistics including packing supplies and equipment and coordinating mobilization of gear to the port and onto the ship. Participating in 2-3 research cruises per year in the Gulf of Alaska for 1-3 week duration each. Filtering for DNA samples, filtering chlorophyll samples, extracting and analyzing chlorophyll samples, and collection of preserved samples for flow cytometry at sea, sometimes under challenging conditions. Maintaining detailed sample logs sheets for all sample types and data collected in field. Documenting field work effort in cruise reports.Essential 25%Lab Management: Maintaining a working lab by ordering chemicals and supplies, maintaining a clean working environment, washing labware, and maintaining equipment.Essential 25%Sample Processing and Data Management: Extraction of genomic DNA, gDNA sample archival, PCR for amplicon sequencing, submitting libraries for sequencing, amplicon data processing and sequence archival in GenBank. Running flow cytometry samples and doing quality control and data processing. Archiving data in the NGA-LTER workspace and doing quality assurance of all data products.Essential 25%Scientific Writing and Analysis: Statistical analysis and data interpretation. Attending meetings/conferences and presenting analysis to synthesize data products with other data from NGA-LTER. Assisting with manuscript and annual report preparation by generating figures, statistical analysis, and text.Essential

Dr. Gwenn Hennon in the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) is seeking a full-time Research Professional in the field of Biological Oceanography. The Hennon lab studies phytoplankton ecology using flow cytometry, culturing, and molecular tools (https://www.hennonlab.com/). We are seeking a Research Professional to coordinate and participate in field work and data analysis for the Northern Gulf of Alaska Long Term Ecological Research project (https://nga.lternet.edu/) and other funded projects. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
● Knowledge of molecular biology and microbial ecology.
● Preferred candidates will be skilled in gDNA extraction, PCR, and amplicon sequence analysis with bioinformatics pipelines (e.g.: Qiime2).
● Ability to manage large data sets, track archived samples and submit data to designated repositories.
● Ability to synthesize data and perform appropriate statistical tests in programming
languages such as R.
● Ability to coordinate complex field logistics and work well in a team science environment under sometimes challenging conditions at sea.

Required Experience & Education:
● Bachelor's degree plus several years of experience with the above defined work; OR a master's degree with 0-2 years of relevant postgraduate experience. A valid driver's license and clean driving record that is in compliance with UA Safe Driving Criteria.

Salary Information:

This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and https://alaska.edu/jobs/benefits.php.
