Position Title: On-Call Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Department: Transportation Department

Reports to: Transportation Superintendent

Position Summary: 

The On-Call Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for troubleshooting, diagnosing and providing repairs, maintenance and services on Tribally-owned heavy equipment including: heavy-duty trucks, material spreader, military-type vehicles, excavators, skidders, bulldozers, graders, dump trucks, snow plows, etc.  They are also responsible to perform minor and major repairs to electircal equipment, drive train, suspension, engine, heaiting, and hydraulic systems. They must be able to operate a variety of diagnostic tools and electrical, air and hand tools.  They maintain records, create and/or complete work orders, purchase requests, quotes, timesheets and attend safety meetings and trainings as required. They adhere to safety standard of safe work practicies in all projects, activities, and operations.  This position is on-call, 0-40 hours per week, with no benefits.


Education:  High School Diploma or GED.  

Experience: Must have a minimum of five years of experience maintaining heavy equipment.  A minimum of 6 months experience working for a Tribe is preferred.

Must be willing and able to safely work in a variety of environments such as: outside with exposure to extreme cold, extreme heat, wet or humid conditions, around high noise levels which interrupt conversation, and able to withstand repeated motion and exposure to fumes and odors from petroleum products. Personal Protective Equipment is provided.

The successful applicant must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with others and must be reachable by phone and able to respond to on-call work orders with sometimes less than one hours notice.

New hires for this position are subject to pre-hire and random alcohol/drug testing.

Hiring Preference:  As allowed in P.L. 93-638, preference for employment will be given to Alaska Native and American Indian Peoples.  CVTC also has a local hiring preference.
