Position Summary:

The Department of Languages' Japanese Program invites applicants for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Japanese beginning in Fall 2023. We are looking for candidates who have an interest in cross-disciplinary/comparative studies with sensitivity to a diverse student population. Candidates should have a strong interest in working with the Japanese Club and leading the Montgomery Dickson Center for Japanese Language & Culture to help strengthen relationships with Japan. As an assistant professor you will contribute to other disciplines and community activities involving Japan and promoting Japan-related interests among UAA students and community members.



Conduct instructional and service activities as part of the workload. Responsible for teaching courses in a manner consistent with the specific course content description. Specific courses taught will depend on the successful applicant's expertise and departmental needs but might include: JPN 101, 102, 201, 202, 301, 302, 350, 390, 490. Faculty member is expected to conduct student mentorship and conduct service to the department and university. Faculty are expected to hold office hours appropriate for the course(s) being taught. Candidate will teach and work with diverse populations.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Evidence of a potential for successful teaching and service activity. Demonstrated successful teaching of Japanese language and Culture at all undergraduate levels with diverse populations.


Demonstrated experience in university course and curriculum development, educational assessment, and instructional technology, with the ability to support and utilize a variety of delivery methods.


Demonstrated experience in the field of Japan-related studies with an emphasis on Japanese language, culture, and society, and an interest in cross-disciplinary/comparative studies.


Native or near-native proficiency in Japanese and English.


Typical Experience:

Length of time and type of experience required for this position should be appropriate to the rank of tenure track assistant professor. Applicants must have university-level teaching experience.


Required Education or Training:

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in in Japanese Language, Linguistics, Comparative Literature or related fields.


ABDs will be considered for the position but employment is contingent on conferral of degree by time of hire in August 2023.


Salary Information:


This is a 9-month, tenure-track faculty appointment with a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package that includes negotiable relocation funds. The position is represented by the United Academics (UNAC) collective bargaining unit agreement (
