Refinery Laborer

The Laborer will perform a variety of manual labor and operations tasks as required by the Refinery Maintenance Manager.  This is a full-time regular position working one week on and one week off. Monday through Sunday from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The position is an entry level position for the Refinery. The following list of essential job duties is not all inclusive

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (and other duties as assigned)

  1. Responsible for general maintenance of the grounds and facilities, including sweeping and gardening.
  2. Operate after proper training and certification, forklifts, skid steer tractor, wheeled tractor along with other powered and non-powered snow and ice removal equipment. 
  3. Assist with replacing filters and routine maintenance throughout the refinery. 
  4. Load and unload trash, grass clippings, lumber, scrap, and other items from cars and/or trucks.
  5. Set up and move offices, including lifting and transporting furniture, equipment and other items. Hang pictures and shelves as directed.
  6. Drive company truck to pick-up parts and supplies in Fairbanks and/or North Pole areas.
  7. Assist in general construction and painting work, as needed.
  8. Participate in oil-spill response drills and emergencies.
  9. Maintain a clean, safe and organized work area. 
  10. Responsible for janitorial duties facility wide (Administration, Control Room, and Maintenance Buildings).
  11. Assist Operations and Safety in weekly and monthly inspections of various fixed and mobile equipment. 
  12. Periodic overtime, including night shift, weekends and holidays may be required.
  13. Learn the refinery hazards, safety procedures, and the various components which make up the refinery.  Refinery Laborer will be provided with training regarding the plant’s hazards, safety procedures and educational materials explaining various components which make up the refinery. The training will be computer based training and fundamental training.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Process technology AA Degree preferred.
  3. Engineering, mechanical, pipe welding, environmental, instrumentation, refining experience or construction skills are beneficial but not required.
  4. Good math skills.
  5. Basic computer skills.
  6. Ability to quickly grasp and master complex ideas and procedures.
  7. Ability to work and function well with other people in a team environment.
  8. Ability to follow instructions.
  9. Must have and maintain an Alaska driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  10. Current 40-hour HAZWOPER Certification Preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees or customers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee is frequently required to sit; reach with hands and arms; and to use hands to finger, handle, or feel.  The employee must frequently lift and carry 40 lbs. at least 20 yards. The employee must have the ability to climb towers up to 105 foot utilizing ladders and platforms and perform their job at those heights. Must be able to perform job functions wearing either half or full face respirators. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions (extreme cold and warm weather). Specific vision abilities required by this job includes the ability to adjust focus.
