The Northern Light Advertising Representative

University of Alaska

The Northern Light Advertising Representative

University of Alaska System

The advertising representatives are responsible for meeting sales goals by selling advertising space in the printed and online edition of The Northern Light, UAA's student-run newspaper. They find new clients by reaching out to organizations on campus and in the community to share advertising opportunities with The Northern Light, while maintaining relationships with existing clients.

The representatives work with clients through the entire sales process. They identify a client's advertising needs, offer additional services, and inform clients of the sales process and ad requirements. They close sales and receive ads by a weekly deadline and ensure ads are being properly placed and run. They submit invoices, maintain billing records, and thank clients after completing sales. They address any issues or client complaints that arise during the sales process using excellent customer service.

The advertising representative is under the advertising and communications manager. They work with them to develop and implement a plan to ensure the fiscal stability of the newspaper, raise brand awareness, engage with the community, and identify revenue opportunities. They are expected to attend weekly meetings to discuss sales. They work with other staff on the paper to fix potential errors in client's ads.

The Northern Light is UAA's student-run newspaper, funded by student media fees and advertising revenue. The Northern Light explains issues that affect UAA while providing balanced coverage in representing students, staff, faculty and the greater community.

The Northern Light serves as a source of news, information, entertainment and offers a platform for discourse. The paper publishes stories online and in print. Copies of the printed edition of The Northern Light are distributed throughout the UAA campus and the Anchorage community. Distribution is about 1,500 copies. The Northern Light's website is www.thenorthernlight.org
