The UAA/APU Consortium Library supports the educational and research programs of the University of Alaska Anchorage and Alaska Pacific University as well as serving as a major research library for Southcentral Alaska.

 

The Circulation Department at the Consortium Library is responsible for the maintenance of the collection for public access, circulating materials into and out of the library, and providing a first point of contact for general patron questions.

 

Circulation student assistants perform a variety of tasks necessary for maintaining the collection and provide support services to Circulation staff and to other library departments. Student assistants DO NOT staff the Circulation Desk, but do work in various areas throughout the library on a daily basis.

 

Although personal preferences will be considered, the Consortium Library has extensive hours and student assistants will be expected and scheduled to work around their classes within these hours:

 

Monday­-Friday 7:30am to 10pm

 

Saturday-Sunday 10am to 10pm

 

Student assistants will be scheduled to work up to a maximum of 20 hours per week during semesters, with the possibility of working up to 40 hours per week during the summer and winter breaks.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: With complete and up-to-date application materials, applicants must demonstrate the ability to:

 

• Follow instructions closely, paying particular attention to detail.

• Work independently after training, without direct supervision. Self­-motivation, initiative, and diligence are essential.

• Manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously, prioritize, and work accurately with frequent interruptions.

• Communicate clearly and accurately verbally and in writing with patrons, staff, and supervisors.

• Accurately organize materials using various filing systems (call numbers, alphabetical, etc.). This includes the ability to learn and develop a thorough understanding of the Library of Congress Classification system.

• Provide quality customer service, helping patrons and answering questions whenever necessary.

 

Special skills/knowledge: Must be able to physically reach over head and crouch/squat down, push and pull loaded book carts, lift 25lbs, stand and/or walk for extended periods of time, with or without reasonable accommodations. Preferred Experience & Education: Some library work or volunteer library experience and at least one semester (12 credits) of college are greatly preferred. Required Experience & Education:

Minimum of one year of work experience requiring attention to detail or use of organizational skills (such as office, clerical, or inventory management jobs).

 

Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

 

To be eligible for student employment at UAA, each applicant must:

A. Be enrolled in the UA system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or

B. Have been enrolled in the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and

C. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average, or approval from the chancellor or the chancellor's designee.

Salary Information:

$10.85/hour
