As an advocate for students, you will connect them with campus resources and ensure compliance with university requirements. Monitoring student progress and offering proactive support will be crucial in fostering their academic success. Strong communication skills, a passion for student development, and the ability to thrive in a complex organizational structure are essential for this position. You will also provide outreach to prospective students including rural Alaskan students, organize workshops to increase student readiness and persistence, and plan activities to support all students with a cross-cultural sense of belonging.

As an important Advising team member you will utilize KPC's student success technology to manage caseloads, hire, train and monitor student workers, and participate in professional development, workshops, and occasional events outside of normal office hours.

 

To thrive in this role you must have a passion for higher education and student success, utilizing your university and campus support services and advising experience to work with individuals from diverse academic, cultural, and economic backgrounds, especially those from rural Alaska. Your customer service and interpersonal skills, including active listening skills and a willingness to initiate dialogue will build rapport with students, your team, KPC employees, and the public. Applying your general understanding of UA enrollment procedures, including admissions, registration, financial aid, etc., and your professional judgment and best practices will benefit students. Your university software experience will be needed to navigate the various advising programs as well as placement tests. Understanding rural Alaskan culture, AK Tribal and AK Native Corporations and Scholarships will help build relationships. Skills such as confidentiality, discretion, planning and organizing are needed to refer students to appropriate areas for assistance and provide functional academic advising. A passion for student development and strong communication skills are a must to relate to students and prospective students.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Bachelor's degree and one year relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Position Details:

 

This position is on-campus, located at the Kenai Peninsula College - Kenai River Campus in Soldotna and is a full-time, 12-month, non-exempt term staff position complete with both a competitive salary and https://www.alaska.edu/hr/benefits/support/prospectiveemployees.php. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the https://www.alaska.edu/hr/benefits/compensation/files/fy24_staff_salary_grid.pdf, Grade 78, with an hourly rate starting at $24.74, based on education and experience.
