Position Summary:
The Department of Art within the University of Alaska Anchorage is inviting applications for a full- time tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Communication Design. This position would entail developing and teaching in a new program that incorporates the studio areas of graphic design, illustration, photography and printmaking. A successful candidate will be mentoring students in the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Art Programs and the Occupational Endorsement Certificate in Graphic Design. We are especially interested in hearing from candidates that demonstrate the ability to work in an interdisciplinary context with majors in studio art.

Teaching will include undergraduate graphic design, typography, and computer art courses in multiple modalities including in-person, online and hybrid. A candidate should have the ability to teach a wide range of historical and contemporary content and emerging theories and methodologies related to design. We are seeking a candidate that is committed to mentoring students, encouraging them to develop critical and visual thinking that will prepare them for careers in advertising, branding and corporate identity, digital product design, exhibit design, interface design, package design, service design, user experience design, and web design.

The applicant's creative work should be vibrant, rich and reflective of contemporary design practices. We are looking for a design/artist whose work bridges between the field of graphic design and fine arts, showing experience in more than one area of creative expression. A successful applicant will have a track record of excellence in professional and scholarly achievement.

Successful applicants will have evidence of creative and professional accomplishments with a trajectory towards developing a national reputation. Specialization in graphic design, web design, typography and computer art. Fluency in Adobe Creative Cloud software: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Keynote, Powerpoint and After Effects. Have strong interpersonal and communication skills. Evidence of a commitment to collegiality, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Two years college/university level teaching experience.

This position requires service to the Department of Art, University of Alaska Anchorage and the community. We are interested in a candidate that is interested in fostering collaboration with other areas within the University and business partners within the community with the end goal benefiting the educational experience of our students.

The Department of Art

The Department of Art, a NASAD accredited institution, is composed of seven full time faculty and ten adjunct faculty whose diverse artistic pursuits provide a wide range of educational opportunities for students. The Department has 118 art majors who are pursuing BA and BFA degrees in six areas of study. Our mission is to prepare and empower students to use their creative abilities to make a difference in our community. A comprehensive multi-studio approach encourages innovative thinking, strengthens creativity and technical ability and develops a broad knowledge of historic and contemporary art and design.

Minimum Qualifications:

Masters of Fine Arts Degree in either/or Visual Art, Graphic Design, Design Communication or related fields.

Position Details:
