Alaska Community Action on Toxics (ACAT) is seeking a highly motivated person to serve as our Water Quality Protection Coordinator and to advance the mission, vision, and campaigns of ACAT.

ACAT is a non-profit environmental health and justice research and advocacy organization with a meaningful mission: “We believe everyone has a right to clean air, clean water, and toxic-free food. Driven by a core belief in environmental justice, ACAT empowers communities to eliminate exposure to toxics through collaborative research, shared science, education, organizing, and advocacy.” We are a vibrant, diverse organization engaged in advocacy campaigns as well as complex longer-term community-based research and scientific projects. ACAT’s staff and governing board are ethnically and culturally diverse.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Passion for our mission toward and achieving environmental justice and health.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in other education and/or lived experience with strong science, law, and/or public health background.
• At least two years of relevant work experience in public or community health, biology or physical science, social science, law, or community organizing, preferably with non-profit research and/or advocacy organization.
• Experience with community and/or environmental health and justice issues, particularly related to water quality and public health.
• Effective project management skills, able to prioritize, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously within established deadlines.
• Excellent research, writing and verbal skills to communicate effectively (e.g., comfortable with public speaking, writing informational materials, research translation, social media).
• Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office, desktop publishing, and database management and data analysis.
• Experience working collaboratively and respectfully with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to build enthusiasm and effort among a team of people.
• Creativity, self-motivation, and ability to work independently.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Work statewide to protect water quality and public health from harmful mining, oil and gas, and military operations.
• Advocate for policies that strengthen the public’s right to know, hold polluters accountable, and uphold environmental protections and human rights.
• Strengthen public engagement in decision-making processes that affect water quality and community health.
• Monitor operations and participate in permitting processes with the goal of preventing harm to the environment and human health, and help with litigation when necessary.
• Prepare educational materials such as fact sheets, reports, and policy papers.
• Coordinate community science and water quality monitoring projects.
• Engage with coalition partners to oppose the proposed Donlin gold mine and proposed road to the Ambler mining district, and minimize mining impacts to water and community health.

Compensation and benefits:

We offer the Water Quality Protection Coordinator job as a full-time position at our Anchorage office or remote location with competitive pay, generous benefits, and opportunities for professional development. Salary range: $53,000-60,000 DOE.
