Grant Writer / Manager

The Native Village of Eyak (NVE) is recruiting for an experienced Grants Department Manager. The Grants Department supports the tribal government and community by seeking financial resources from federal, state, local, and private agencies, entities, and individuals. The Grants Manager will pursue and obtain funding, manage reporting and other requirements associated with awarded grants and contracts, and work with departments and executive management to ensure that financial resources effectively support pilot programs, new programs and projects, existing priorities, projects and programs and other initiatives that help meet the needs of NVE and tribal members.

This position exercises some latitude in determining objectives and approaches to critical assignments.

Team: Grants Management                            Salary Range: $75,000.00-$95,000.00 DOE

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Supervises and manages department staff and/or consultant grant writers/fundraisers.
  • Maintains working relationships with funding agencies and actively seeks funding to implement projects.
  • Develops Grants Department policies & procedures.
  • Works with management and staff to help develop a Comprehensive Plan.
  • Communicates the status of program activities to the NVE and tribal members.
  • Works closely with appropriate staff to research statistics, trends, needs, census, and other sourced data on population, income, housing, and other relevant information necessary for competitive proposals.
  • Drafts appropriate Letters of Intent, Letters of Support and coordinates the receipt of same from internal and external sources, as needed.
  • Coordinates and supports Department Managers and designated staff in implementing capital fundraising efforts to achieve authorized initiative and project goals.
  • Works with Department Managers and designated staff on grant compliance and reporting including outcome measurement, grant budgets, and identifying when to initiate reimbursements and drawdowns as needed.
  • Monitors and tracks funder and investor funding cycles, reporting schedules, and requirements.
  • Maintains regular communication process with Department Managers, Finance Department, and Executive Staff to explore funding opportunities and monitor the status of grants.
  • Maintains a library of grant support documents including resumes, bios, IRS forms, and associated documents.
  • Performs grant review and audit of tribal programs and projects as it relates to grants compliance.
  • Research federal, state, local, and private funding sources and maintain a source directory for funding the needs of the Tribe.
  • Prepares outline of annual planned activities for grant applications and existing grants and works with department and program managers to outline work plans.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Must have at least five (5) years of progressively responsible and successful grant writing and managing experience; fundraising and development work may be included.
  • Strong writing and organizational skills are a must.
  • Strong communication skills is essential.
  • Able to draft budgets and connect funding amounts to activities that meet tribal needs.
  • Requires the ability to effectively communicate with elected officials, colleagues, employees, community members, state and federal agency staff members, and with funding source representatives through written, oral and face-to-face interactions.
  • Requires the ability to work under pressure and respond to deadlines without sacrificing quality.
  • Requires knowledge of Federal, State, local, and private funding sources.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents required.
  • Ability to effectively present information to Tribal Council, Executive Staff, Department Managers, public groups, and/or committees and boards required.
  • Intermediate to expert skills required in Microsoft products and experience with geographic information systems is strongly preferred.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Public Administration, Finance, or a related degree is also acceptable with appropriate experience.
  • Experience with tribal government and in Alaska preferred.
  • Current Alaska Driver’s license required.
  • Experience with governmental agencies and Tribes required.
  • Experience in seeking and maintaining funding sources helpful. A strong record of successful grant writing may substitute for education.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk to complete tasks.
  • Most work will be completed in an indoor office setting; occasionally some will be completed in a remote setting.
