Tyonek Tribal Conservation District


The Tyonek Tribal Conservation District (TTCD) team is seeking an Outreach Manager who will be responsible for community outreach and educational programming. Current projects include the development and implementation of K-12 curriculum, intern training, multi-modal community engagement, storytelling via social media and quarterly newsletters, networking with district partners, assisting with outcome assessment, assisting with grant management, and continuing to develop measurable outreach goals for our conservation programs. The ideal candidate will have experience in developing and delivering informal and hands-on, STEM-based curriculum for K-12 classrooms, collaborating with content experts to develop lessons, program management experience, and excellent storytelling skills.  The right candidate may not have a strong grant writing or evaluation background, but is interested in developing expertise in these skills.

This position is based in Anchorage and involves day and multi-day travel to remote western Cook Inlet communities (Tyonek, Beluga, and Skwentna) and other locations.

JOB FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leading the development and implementation of K-12 curriculum, with a focus on conservation and food security science.
  • Leading TTCD’s storytelling efforts through social media and newsletters.
  • Leading the design and implementation of effective community engagement models.
  • Coordinating with Tebughna School leadership and other informal education partners to deliver effective and integrated outreach during the school year.
  • Active participation in Dena’ina language and culture lessons for integration in outreach modules.
  • Assisting the Garden team in creating and implementing summer intern trainings.
  • Networking with other tribal conservation districts in Alaska to collaborate on outreach products.
  • Assists with grant research, management, and writing to maintain and/or advance habitat program funding.
  • Working with the Executive Director and external evaluators on program assessments.
  • Working with the Executive Director to redesign the ttcd.org website towards more effective community science engagement in our district.
  • Maintains a positive working relationship with internal and external partners.
  • Supports other TTCD programs as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
  • Minimum of three years in relevant informal outreach positions with demonstrated experience in designing STEM-based programming that aligns with educational standards.
  • Familiarity with measuring impact for engagement and learning outcomes.
  • Strong storytelling and writing skills.
  • Comfortable with change, innovation, and creative approaches to collaboration and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully both independently and within a team environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively and comfortably with partners of different backgrounds and experiences.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Successful grant writing experience.
  • Experience delivering outreach to multiple locations in rural Alaska.
  • Experience working with Alaska Native villages and with Alaska Native corporations.

THE ORGANIZATION

The Tyonek Tribal Conservation District is a non-regulatory, nonprofit 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to conserve, enhance, and encourage the wise use of natural resources by fostering cooperative relationships between agencies, district landowners, and local stakeholders. TTCD serves 6.6M acre geographic region defined by Alaska Game Management Unit 16b. The creation of TTCD was made possible through a mutual agreement between the Native Village of Tyonek, Tyonek Native Corporation, and the United States Department of Agriculture.

TTCD consists of six full-time staff members headquartered in Anchorage, Alaska, as well as part-time staff in the Tyonek/Beluga region who focus on implementing seasonal garden, outreach, and field projects. A leader in its work, TTCD has gained state and national recognition for its efforts to support subsistence and sustainability through our Habitat Monitoring & Restoration, Tyonek Grown, Tyonek Youth Conservation Science, and Technical Assistance programs. To facilitate this work, TTCD annually operates several multi-year federal and state grants, as well as numerous corporate and local grants.
