About Camp Denali in 2023 Camp Denali is a small, family-run wilderness lodge located in the heart of Denali National Park. The Park Road is temporarily closed at its midway point, meaning that our only access is by air. In 2022, we successfully operated as a fly-in lodge and we will continue to do so until the Park Road reopens in 2025 (at the earliest). Our remote location combined with limited access informs our risk management efforts, including our policy that all staff and guests be up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations.

Position Description The Facilities Manager works cooperatively with management to maintain the physical infrastructure of the Company, which includes tools, equipment, buildings, vehicles and grounds. During the summer season, this person trains, supervises and instructs a 2 to 5-person crew comprised of skilled, semi-skilled and/or unskilled workers in the implementation of maintenance objectives. Pre and post-season work includes the opening and closing of the seasonal systems, the planning and procurement of inventory and hands-on work with construction projects in addition to assisting with hiring operations staff.

Compensation Salary is $4,500-$5,500/month, commensurate with training and experience. A high-deductible group health insurance plan, which can be paired with an employee-funded Health Savings Account (HSA) is offered. Health insurance premiums are currently paid 100% by the company; coverage continues through the off-season when it is the Facility Manager’s intention to return the following season. A retirement savings option is provided beginning in the third year of employment via a SIMPLE IRA; the employer provides an annually revised contribution of up to 3%, which may be dependent on employee participation. There are no charges for room or board during the summer season. Summer guest gratuities are pooled and divided equally among all staff, amounting to approximately $500/person/month. This position is eligible for the seasonal travel stipend, paid upon completion of a full season to help defray the cost of travel. Off-season work is paid monthly at an hourly rate of $25.00.

Major Functions

• Support the mission of Camp Denali.
• Service and maintain power generation facilities and their associated distribution systems (photovoltaic system including solar tracking motors/mechanisms, Ni-Fe battery bank, charge controllers and associated inverters in addition to a conventional diesel generator).
• Oversee, perform testing on, and scheduled reporting for a surface water treatment plant and its distribution systems.
• Organize and facilitate the movement of cargo to and from a nearby airstrip.
• Daily cleaning, maintenance, prepping, diagnostics, and repair of a large motor pool (including light trucks, vans, buses, medium duty trucks, loader-backhoes, trailer, bulldozer, excavator, and snowmobiles).
• General building maintenance, including carpentry, painting, roofing, etc.
• Maintain commercial kitchen and bakery equipment and systems.
• Measure and catalog fuel levels and consumption.
• Landscaping of grounds and road maintenance of 1.5 miles of gravel roadway.
• Repair of systems and appliances: plumbing, heating, refrigeration, electrical, wastewater/septic, and fueling.
• Fire training, fire response, and suppression.
• MSDA, OSHA, DEC and other regulatory awareness, compliance, and recordkeeping.
• Maintain Operations department inventory.
• Maintain and clean tools and supplies and ensure that Operations equipment is well-cared for and properly used. 
• Train, coach, supervise, and evaluate a core crew of 3-5 staff who work in the Operations Department 3-5 days per week.
• Help select a team member from the Ops Crew to lead on your days off, and work with that individual to line out projects and priorities.
• Train and provide day-to-day supervision for all staff assigned to Operations shifts as a secondary role, 1-2 days per week. Maintain open lines of communications with those staff members’ primary supervisors about their work performance.
• Promote staff morale by providing effective and positive leadership.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Prior experience and basic skill with general carpentry, fine carpentry, automotive and truck repair, plumbing, heating, electrical wiring, generator maintenance, and metal fabrication
• Possessing a commercial driver’s license (Class B or higher with passenger and airbrake endorsements) is valuable, but not required
• Obtaining an Alaska Water Treatment Operator Certification prior to the start of the season will be required  
• Familiarity with tractor, loader, forklift, backhoe, excavator, and bulldozer
• Project design, preparation, and ordering
• Demonstrated attention to detail and thoroughness in past work experience
• Strong team player, with supervisory experience and a readiness to fill-in as needed
• Management style that relies heavily on leading by example
• Written, verbal, and visual communication skills
• Physical fitness and stamina
• Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification is valuable, but not required

Other Requirements We ask for a three-season commitment for this role. It is imperative that all staff bring a genuine desire to live and work in a remote, self-sufficient, small community setting. Working at Camp Denali requires a willingness to pitch in, sometimes outside of posted work hours. All staff are required to be “up-to-date” with COVID-19 vaccinations.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands Minimum work arrangement is 50 hours/week, worked across five days. Will work seven days a week and longer hours during early/late seasons and during facility “emergencies.” This position is “on call” overnight and through weekends to help support time-sensitive maintenance concerns. Long hours of standing and walking. Lifting and carrying heavy objects. Climbing ladders. Use of hand tools and power tools.

Weather and working conditions in our remote location are highly variable, from downright unpleasant to sublime. A positive mindset, tolerance, and sense of humor toward swarms of mosquitos and biting flies are essential in this role.
