BUS DRIVER - Kodiak

JOB SUMMARY:  This position is 35 hours per week, 38 weeks per year with summer layoff. Operates and maintains Head Start bus in compliance with all applicable federal and state vehicle and traffic safety laws and Head Start Transportation’s policies & procedures to assure safe transportation of children and parents.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Understands and complies with Head Start Programs’ policies and procedures, RurAL CAP’s policies and procedures, Child and Adult Care Food Program guidelines and all applicable Federal, State and local motor vehicle laws. 
  2. Safely transports children between the center and home or designated pick-up points, on field trips, and, transports parents of enrolled children to and from designated Head Start activities.
  3. Responsible for training Bus Monitor on all duties and responsibilities including safety policies and procedures.
  4. Responsible for bus maintenance, safety and cleanliness.
  5. Participates in weekly staff meetings, regular supervisory meetings and all required training.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assists classroom, kitchen or janitorial staff as requested by supervisor and as work schedule permits.
  2. Performs other duties as assigned.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
The position status and hours of work varies with location. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
TRAVEL:
Occasional travel required with arctic cold climate conditions. Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS AND REQUIRED EDUCATION:

  1. Must be at least 21 years of age.
  2. Must successfully pass a State of Alaska and federal criminal background check including fingerprints.
  3. High School Diploma or GED.
  4. Must have, or obtain, a current Alaska Commercial Driver License (CDL) with a Passenger endorsement and School Bus endorsement at time of hire and every 5 years thereafter at own expense.
  5. Must provide a copy of current driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles annually.
  6. Must obtain a School Bus Driver’s Medical Examiners’ Certificate at the date of hire and thereafter every other year at employee’s expense. The initial exam will be paid by employer.
  7. Must provide TB screening clearance and physical within thirty (30) days of hire and annually thereafter at employee’s expense.
  8. Must obtain Alaska Food Worker’s Card within thirty (30) days of hire with follow-up every three (3) years at employer’s expense.
  9. Must have a current certification of, or complete and maintain, Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation, (CPR) card and First Aid Training Certification.
  10. Must submit to mandatory drug and alcohol testing at the employer’s expense.
  11. Must attend 15 hours of professional development training annually.
  12. Must keep all matters concerning participants in strictest confidence as required by HIPAA privacy and the 42 CFR, Part II confidentiality regulations. 
  13. Proven ability and willingness to be self-directed in problem-solving and decision-making and perform basic assignment with little or no direct supervision while also working effectively as a team member.
  14. Responsible work ethic with reliable attendance.
  15. Ability to complete paperwork in an accurate and timely manner.
  16. Basic skill level in word processing, spreadsheets and email.
  17. Must be able to provide own transportation to meet work schedule requirements.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. Alaska CDL experience with vehicle safety and maintenance knowledge.
  2. Experience working with young children.
  3. Familiarity with the social, cultural, political, economic, and service delivery systems of rural Alaska. Competence in multi-cultural environments.
