Position Summary:

University of Alaska OIT Telecommunications Services is seeking a qualified candidate for a Lead Network Engineering position. Our mission is to provide fast reliable network connectivity to University of Alaska campuses across the state. We manage University of Alaska system WAN and Internet / Internet 2 connectivity as well as local and metro area networks for University of Alaska Fairbanks and their remote campuses and learning centers. In this position you would focus on the planning, design, implementation, and sustainability of our wide area network and data center infrastructure. This would be a great opportunity for an experienced Network Engineer, looking to lead a team of network engineers and network technicians. You would work in a team of motivated network engineers and along with our Network Operations team. You would also work closely with other IT departments in the university system to ensure that we are aligned with infrastructure, business strategy and standards.

 

Duties:

1-40Leads the router management function within the Network Engineering section. - Delegates and designs and engineers network installations to support a communications network (voice, data, video). - Supervises administration, monitoring and/or modification of automated router IS software, applications and/or interfaces. - Designs, tests and implements hardware platforms and operating system software.Essential 2-15Assigns and performs technical information systems tasks requiring expertise and/or specialized knowledge in an information systems technical/scientific discipline. Delegates and performs detail analysis and interpretation of technical problems requiring specialized knowledge and skills in a technical discipline; applies subject matter expertise unique to the discipline.Essential 3-15Serves as expert advisor for major University systems and networks by: 1) analyzing issues which have no documented resolution or standard process to determine appropriate response; and 2) providing authoritative solutions related to software, hardware and network integration.Essential 4-15Delegates and performs highly technical responsible work in providing computer services support related to: managing the WAN infrastructure for Statewide plus overseeing associated MAU equipment; installing/upgrading selected computer systems software. Develops and maintains advanced networking/engineering functions that support LANs. Supervises and/or designs and implements network architectures and analyzes/resolves complex problems in a WAN system. Plans, coordinates, and implements security measures to safeguard sensitive information.Essential 5-15Serves as unit or project leader, developing scope, timeline and project team. Delegates, directs and reviews project group members assignments for both OIT and Systemwide projects.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Intense technical problem solving skills are a daily requirement of this position requiring honed analysis and troubleshooting expertise. This lead position provides oversight of all router management activities performed by the Network Engineering staff.

 

Typical Experience:

10+ years of relevant experience in a focused range of computer-oriented disciplines: network architecture, routers/switches, technical analysis, troubleshooting, and technical documentation.

 

Required Education or Training:

Education: Bachelor's degree+ in a related discipline or equivalent experience.

Training: Computer course work or OJT in networks, routers/switches, and analytic thinking.

 

Salary Information:

 

This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and https://alaska.edu/jobs/benefits.php.
