General Merchandise Category Manager

The General Merchandise Category Manager for Pacific Alaska Wholesale (PAW), the wholesale arm of the North West Company International (NWCI), is accountable for profitable sales and growth of our wholesale general merchandise business within the strategic directions and tasks approved by the Vice President of Wholesale. The Category Manager will lead a team that strategizes to deliver market share targets and build consumer loyalty. They will achieve sales, inventory turns, and gross profit targets. The Category Manager is responsible for sourcing, pricing, and marketing products to profitably grow the department to the gross profit line. They will build vendor alliances and programs that build the long-term health of assigned merchandise departments.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for supervising the department(s) Support Specialist
    • Monitor performance of assigned tasks of reporting employees
    • Train and develop reporting employees to meet department goals
    • Train and develop reporting employees for department succession
  • Meet monthly GM sales targets as set in the annual budget for PAW
    • Maintain and continue to develop a competitive PAW GM offering
    • Purchase and maintain inventory within budget for PAW seasonal programs
    • Establish the appropriate retail prices to attain the budgeted gross profit
    • Coordinate with NWCI Marketing on assortments and inventory issues
    • Continually seek new merchandise through publications, trade shows, and vendor meetings
    • Meet sales and budgeted margin goals
  • Develop strategic marketing plans including advertising, in-store specials, promotional and special buys
    • Monitor and report on promotional costs and benefits
    • Maintain a yearly merchandise marketing calendar for assigned categories
    • Manage promotional markdowns within budget
  • Perform category assessments on all categories and implement changes necessary as outlined in plan
    • Monitor and report on category performance post assessments and refine as needed on an ongoing basis
    • Gather and analyze consumer data, market, and industry information to ensure the proper formulation of strategies and tactics that enable effective prediction and reaction to the industry trends in order to drive innovation in the assigned categories
  • Maintain and build relationships with key PAW customers
    • Occasional travel to accounts as needed
    • Host accounts when they are traveling to and through Seattle
    • Annual attendance of the Rural Small Business Conference in Anchorage
  • Ensure service levels to PAW customers are met
    • Track order fulfillment levels and reorder or substitute for shortages
    • Monitor pricing to provide accurate costs and suggested retail for our customers to ensure competitive balance in their market
    • Regularly communicate with existing PAW customers to assure customer satisfaction
  • Identify and secure new PAW accounts
    • Monitor business activity in Rural Alaska to identify potential new accounts
    • Continue to use the Rural Small Business Conference as a tool to promote PAW as a preferred provider of wholesale accounts
  • Develop and deploy marketing material
    • Develop and distribute PAW seasonal GM catalogs
    • Monitor and update PAW GM offering in the standard catalog
    • Leverage PAW rebate program to increase sales

Desired skills & experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or equivalent from a four-year college or three years’ related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Extensive MS Office Suite experience including above-average knowledge of Excel
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills
  • Strong math skills
  • Aptitude with successful negotiations
  • Strong communication skills both oral and written
  • Five years’ retail experience in a supervisory role, retail management, and/or previous purchasing experience preferred
  • Experience with Profit and Loss statement review, budgeting, and operating statement review experience preferred
  • Ability to problem-solve complex issues and know when to escalate
  • Impeccable attention to detail
  • Strong time management
  • Ability to negotiate with vendors to meet Category targets and objectives

Working conditions:

  • Fast-paced office environment
  • Primarily computer work; able to sit/stand in one place for long periods of time
  • Multiple phone calls and meetings on a daily/weekly basis
  • Open area office environment
  • Ability to travel up to 30% of the year

Reports to: Sales Representative I
Starting salary (DOE): $83,000.00/annually + eligible for Short Term Incentive Plan
