Job Summary
The director of Teaching and Learning provides leadership and vision to plan, align, develop, and implement curriculum, instruction, and assessment within a Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) for academics. The director reports to the senior director of Teaching and Learning. This position requires a valid Alaska teaching or administrative certificate and has a retirement association with the Alaska Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS).
Job Requirements
The following are required:
- A master’s degree in educational administration or curriculum and instruction
- Possess an Alaska type B administrative certificate by start date.
- A minimum of five years of satisfactory experience as an administrator.
- Demonstrated knowledge and application of best practices in curriculum, instruction, and assessment within a MTSS framework for academics and behavior.
- Demonstrated record of success in leading strategic educational initiatives that resulted in measurable improvements in student achievement.
- Recent administrative experience which includes developing and managing budgets.
- Evidence of exceptional communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
The following are preferred:
- Recent administrative experience that includes leading curriculum and instructional efforts, helping all students achieve outcomes, and resolving concerns.
- Knowledge, background, and training in supervision and management.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of professional development and how adults learn.
- Strong skills in listening, speaking, writing, problem-solving, and public process facilitation.
- Ability to maintain rapport and respect of principals and teachers.
- Ability to utilize technology and a variety of applications.
Essential Job Functions
- Works in tandem with the other academic services leaders to focus, with an emphasis on equity for traditionally underserved student groups, the work of elementary-level staff on ensuring that all students leave elementary school prepared for secondary education, while also focusing the work of secondary-level staff on ensuring that all students leave secondary school prepared for post K-12 schools or the workforce.
- Facilitates the implementation of a robust MTSS for all students and the implementation of district teaching and learning initiatives.
- Collaborates with instructional support departments (e.g., special education, English language learner, Title I, etc.), curriculum coordinators and district assessment coordinators to align curriculum, instruction, and assessment resources and practices within a MTSS framework.
- Uses data to inform decisions and works with the accountability department to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and learning initiatives
- Facilitates and coordinates professional development for elementary instructional coaches and guides the creation of professional development modules for school staff.
- Works with a team to lead the review and adoption process for K-12 curriculum.
- Plans and executes strategic change initiatives through facilitation of dialogue among various stakeholders and coordination of resources.
- Serves as leader and general resource person in matters relating to curriculum and instruction.
- Keeps current on research and best practices in teaching and learning, and promotes the systematic implementation of effective educational practices, such as explicit and systematic instruction, culturally responsive practices, and inquiry based.
