Commercial Lines Senior Underwriter


Overview

Umialik Insurance Company, a member of the Western National Insurance Group, is looking to add an experienced Commercial Lines Senior Underwriter to our Anchorage team. This position is responsible to develop a book of business by writing and retaining larger and more complex commercial lines accounts through our assigned agency partners.

This is an amazing opportunity for an individual seeking to effectively build and maintain strong agency relationships, operate under a designated level of authority while developing and growing a larger and more complex book of business, and assess risk and exposures to identify business opportunities that maximize loss ratio and growth objectives.

The ideal candidate will have their CPCU, AU or CIC certification or willing to attain such designation as well as have at least three years of experience in a similar position.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews, classifies, evaluates, and prices business within an established level of authority.
  • Effectively manages an agency territory to achieve established growth and profit goals while building and maintaining strong agency relationships.
  • Manages larger, challenging and more complex commercial business and agency assignments.
  • Assesses risk and exposures while maximizing assigned territory loss ratio and growth objectives.
  • Travels to assigned agencies to build on agency partnerships and promote/negotiate higher agency ranking positions.
  • Applies company guidelines and procedures to determine acceptability of new business and renewals of increasing complexity.
  • Identifies and analyzes patterns from partial and/or conflicting data, finding solutions.
  • Provides technical support and mentorship to other team members.
  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of property-and-casualty commercial lines underwriting experience.
  • CPCU, AU, or CIC certification required or willing to attain.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Insurance or Finance or equivalent related experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of industry best practices, standards and commercial multi-line underwriting concepts.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, and solve complex problems.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong negotiation, relationship building, and analytical skills.
